The New York Mets are reportedly open to trading David Peterson, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon. It's a move that could fill a pressing need.

Per the reporting, Peterson is garnering trade interest during the Winter Meetings, making him one of multiple starting pitchers for whom the Mets have received calls.

The Mets are looking for a similar deal to the Brandon Nimmo-for-Marcus Semien trade, which means they'd trade one of their expendable outfielders for a strong defensive infielder in Semien.

The trade involved no prospects being exchanged — it was a like-for-like deal. Peterson is making a low salary figure, which will help his trade value, along with his steady, consistent production as a starting pitcher.

The southpaw is in his final year under team control, set to make around $7 million in arbitration, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Peterson had his best year back in 2024, when he earned a 2.9 bWAR and posted a 2.90 ERA in 21 starts. He pitched in 20 games during the 2025 season, but his ERA dipped to 4.22, mainly due to a second-half slump that affected most of the team.

He started the year well, earning his first career All-Star nod. He had a 3.06 ERA in the first half of the season, but his production dropped off to 6.34 ERA.

Among the other Mets starters available for trade is Japanese pitcher Kodai Senga, who has two years left on his deal at $15 million per season. He also has a team option for 2028.

Senga has been a good starter since coming stateside, though at 32, he is getting up there in age and should be one of the more expendable names for the Mets. He was valued at only a 2.1 bWAR last season, a step down from his 2023 4.5 bWAR total.

The Mets can deal either Senga or Peterson for a decent return that could add depth elsewhere. Senga stands out as the more likely trade candidate due to his age and existing contract.
