The Miami Marlins have undergone one of the most thorough house cleanings ever since their 2024 regular season concluded.

In late September, manager Skip Schumaker announced he would not return in 2025, ending a two-year run in which he went 144-178 record as the team's manager.

That move precipitated a nearly unprecedented dismissal of the team's entire coaching staff.

Eleven uniformed coaches served under Schumaker in 2024. According to multiple reports, only bench coach Luis Urueta and first base/outfielders coach Jon Jay were extended the possibility to come back under a new manager in 2025.

Then, on Oct. 3, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported the Marlins had let go of more than 70 staffers — a list that included some in player development, the team's dietitian, the home clubhouse manager, and the traveling secretary, among others.

Whoever pilots the 2025 Marlins is getting a clean slate.

According to a new report by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the leading candidate might still be coaching in the postseason.

"Guardians bench coach Craig Albernaz is considered a big candidate for Marlins manager," Heyman wrote. "He's linked to GM Peter Bendix as a former Rays minors coach and as bullpen and catching coach in San Francisco for Gabe Kapler, now Marlins assistant GM. One other name heard for the Fish is their bench coach, Luis Urueta."

Heyman also cited a source who compared Urueta to Carlos Mendoza, who this week managed the Mets into the National League Championship Series.

Albernaz, 41, was named the Guardians' bench coach in Nov. 2023 after DeMarlo Hale's departure to the Toronto Blue Jays. He spent the previous four seasons (2020-23) as the bullpen coach of the San Francisco Giants.

Prior to joining the Giants' major league staff, Albernaz coached and managed in the Tampa Bay Rays' system from 2015-19, compiling a two-year managerial record of 145-83 (.636) in 2017-18 at Single-A Hudson Valley and Single-A Bowling Green before serving as minor league field coordinator in 2019.

Albernaz's coaching career began with the Rays in 2015 as a hitting coach at Rookie-level Princeton before holding the same role with Hudson Valley in 2016.

In 2017, he began the season with Triple-A Durham (third base and catching coach) before managing short-season Hudson Valley, leading them to a NY-Penn League championship.

Cleveland is currently tied 2-2 in its American League Division Series with the Detroit Tigers.
