Chadwick Tromp didn't waste long finding his next destination in baseball. He didn't even leave the American League East.

Four days after he was outrighted by the Baltimore Orioles, Tromp has signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

Tromp, 30, was on a minor league rehab assignment last week when he was outrighted by the Orioles to their Triple-A affiliate. He elected free agency instead, and four days later was in uniform for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.

Tromp played just six games with Baltimore before a low back strain sent him to the injured list on July 1. In eight MLB games this season — six with Baltimore, two with the Atlanta Braves — he went 3 for 21 (.143) with a home run and a walk.

In 67 major league games with the San Francisco Giants (2020-21), Braves (2022-25) and Orioles, Tromp is a .221/.230/.390 hitter with six home runs and 23 RBIs. The native of Aruba played in the Cincinnati Reds' minor league system from 2013-19.

Since Tromp suffered his back injury, the Orioles have activated starting catcher Adley Rustchmann from the injured list. They are also attempting to carve a path for prospect Samuel Basallo to reach the majors amid a rebuilding season.

Despite beating the Toronto Blue Jays 16-4 on Tuesday, the Orioles are open for business as Thursday's trade deadline approaches. Basallo, 20, is batting .280 with 13 doubles, 20 homers, 50 RBIs and a 1.009 OPS over 64 games for Norfolk this season through Monday.

Against this backdrop, there was no room on Baltimore's depth chart for Tromp, a career backup.

The Red Sox have shuffled through backup catchers this season themselves. Rookie Carlos Narvaez looks like a long-term fixture at the position after hitting .258 with nine home runs in his first 81 games of 2025.

But Tromp, along with recently acquired veteran Ronaldo Hernandez, gives Boston depth behind Narvaez and Connor Wong.

Wong, 29, is slashing .151/.231/.161 in his fifth season with Boston and could lose playing time to Tromp or Hernandez if either veteran hits well at Worcester.

The Red Sox are 57-51, third in both the American League East and the AL Wild Card standings through Monday.
