Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, the Terrapins made the decision to keep Locksley for 2026. The program plans to enact changes, hoping that better funding will help the school compete more effectively with Big Ten teams.

"Maryland coach Mike Locksley will continue as head coach in 2026 and the school plans to significantly increase financial support to the program, athletic director Jim Smith told ESPN," Thamel wrote.

Smith wants to prioritize keeping young talent on the roster, including freshman quarterback Malik Washington. Washington has thrown for 2,294 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The program also wants to build around freshmen defensive end stars Sidney Stewart and Zahir Mathis.

Smith told ESPN that Maryland believes the program can strengthen NIL support to have a better season in 2026.

"We are working to strengthen our NIL support for 2026 and beyond, and have already seen success for next year," Smith said. "We are prioritizing roster retention, recruiting and competing in the transfer portal."

Locksley, 55, is 37-47 overall and 17-46 in Big Ten play during his eight seasons with Maryland.

The Terrapins have not had a winning season since 2023, when they finished 8-5 and defeated Auburn 31-13 in the Music City Bowl. He's won three bowl games with the program.

Before his stints as the head coach of Maryland, Locksley went 2-26 at New Mexico.
