The College Football Playoff selection committee leaving Notre Dame (10-2) out of the 12-team field was one of the more polarizing decisions since switching to the playoff format back in 2014.
College football fans were up in arms on social media after the Fighting Irish were snubbed from the CFP field while the Miami Hurricanes (10-2) leapfrogged them in the final standings despite being ranked two spots behind them the previous week and not playing a game in two weeks.
During an interview with Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports immediately after the selection show, Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua called for the CFP weekly ranking shows to be abolished, blaming them for the reason for such outrage with Miami and Notre Dame switching places in the final standings.

The good news for Irish fans, however, is that the school is guaranteed not to have a repeat situation during next year’s CFP selection show should they be ranked in a similar spot.

“In an interesting wrinkle, as part of a memorandum of understanding signed by CFP officials last spring, Notre Dame will be assured of making the playoff if it is ranked in the top 12 starting next year, Bevacqua tells Yahoo Sports,” Dellenger wrote.
“For instance, if this year’s circumstances unfold next year, the final at-large team (Miami) would have gotten automatically bumped from the field for No. 11 Notre Dame.
“If the playoff is expanded to 14 teams and there are more at-large berths added to the field (from seven to nine), Notre Dame is guaranteed into the field if it is ranked No. 13 or better, according to the MOU.”

After learning their College Football Playoff fate, Notre Dame rejected any invitation to play in a bowl game. It was believed the Fighting Irish were pegged for a matchup against BYU, another team not happy with its snub from the CFP field, in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
It marks the first time since 2016 that Notre Dame won’t play in the postseason.
