The Texas Tech Red Raiders are moving on from the Brendan Sorsby saga and have named their starting quarterback for the upcoming season.

Sorsby transferred from Cincinnati to Texas Tech this winter. The Red Raiders were reportedly set to pay him on a deal worth $4 to $6 million for the upcoming season.

However, TTU parted ways with Sorsby in the wake of the aftermath of the quarterback's stint in rehab for a gambling addiction and anxiety disorder. Texas Tech chose not to recover the money they had already paid Sorsby, though it's unclear how much of the contract they had paid before parting ways with him in June.

On Friday, Texas Tech revealed in a post on X that Will Hammond will be its starting quarterback this fall.

Hammond suffered a torn ACL against Oklahoma State on Oct. 25. The Red Raiders only brought in Sorsby via the transfer portal because the team was uncertain when Hammond could return from his injury.

"We're really fortunate to have Will," McGuire said, via CBS Sports. "If he's not hurt, then we're not talking about this. We wouldn't have necessarily been looking for a starting quarterback; we'd have been looking for probably a depth piece in that room. He's in a good spot."

Texas Tech hopes he can return in Week 1 when it hosts Abilene Christian. Hammond threw for 680 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions in his freshman season in 2025. The native of Austin, Texas, appeared in eight games and started in two games when starting quarterback Behren Morton suffered an injury.

Texas Tech's only loss in the regular season last year came when Hammond was the starter on the road against Arizona State. He struggled against the ASU defense, throwing for 167 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a 26-22 loss.

With Sorsby off the team, Hammond was the best option available to start at quarterback for Texas Tech. Lloyd Jones III and Kirk Francis will back up Hammond this season.

With Sorsby, Texas Tech was a favorite to win the Big 12 and were thought to be a national championship contender with another loaded defense. Offense, especially at the quarterback position, was an issue in TTU's 23-0 loss to Oregon in the CFP semifinal at the Orange Bowl in January.

TTU should have enough talent to win the Big 12 with Hammond under center. Whether the second-year quarterback can lead the Red Raiders to a win in the CFP remains to be seen.
