Backup quarterback Brandon Allen is expected to start if Purdy can't play, per 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The latest update is bad news for a San Francisco squad that has to win most, if not all, of their upcoming games in order to get a spot in the playoffs.
The 49ers quarterback rotation on Friday featured Allen, Josh Dobbs, and Tanner Modecai.
General manager John Lynch gave an update on Purdy's injury via KNBR, but called the starting quarterback's status 'tenuous' after undergoing an MRI.
"We've done that (MRI) and feel good about where it's at from that standpoint," Lynch said. "We're kind of figuring all that out. Brock is going to show up today, we'll see where he can go and we'll make some decisions accordingly. It is tenuous. Brandon Allen & Josh Dobbs would both be ready but Brandon would get 1st snaps."
Allen has nine career starts, the most recent of which came when he played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021. Allen's best performance was a 371-yard, two-touchdown performance in 2020 for the Bengals.
Purdy was originally set to speak to the media in his usual Thursday press conference, but his appearance was suddenly canceled just minutes before he was supposed to talk.
The 49ers pushed back the press conference to Friday, only highlighting the grim quarterback situation for San Francisco.
Additionally, defensive end Nick Bosa and left tackle Trent Williams missed practice for a third straight day. The game status for Purdy, Bosa, and Williams is very much in doubt for the team's road-game matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
The San Francisco squad will enter Lambeau Field with slim chances of making the playoffs. The odds of making the playoffs for the 49ers is even lower when three of the team's most important players aren't practicing on the Friday before the game.
The 49ers were once the powerhouse of the NFC West, but the 2024 campaign has quickly fallen apart for San Francisco.
