The San Francisco 49ers are facing potential trouble on the defensive side of the football.
One of their biggest glaring weaknesses entering the 2025 season comes at the safety position. There have been some injuries in the secondary and the overall talent level could be a problem as well.
With that in mind, the 49ers could be a team to watch when it comes to adding help at safety.

Grant Cohn, who covers the team for San Francisco 49ers on SI, has made a bold suggestion for San Francisco. He believes that Shilo Sanders would be worth taking a look at.

Of course, Sanders was recently released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Could the 49ers actually look into the idea of bringing him in to compete for playing time?
Take a look at what Cohn had to say on the matter to find out just how bad the team's current safety situation is right now.
At the very worst, Sanders could come in and be depth for San Francisco in the secondary. He may not be ready to play a huge role as a rookie, but there is no question that he has the talent to be a bench piece who could step in if called upon.
During the 2024 college football season with the Colorado Buffaloes, while playing for Deion Sanders, the younger Sanders put up solid numbers. He totaled 67 total tackles to go along with a sack, a forced fumble, and two defended passes.
Back in 2023 with Colorado, he racked up 67 tackles, four forced fumbles, an interception, a defensive touchdown, and three defended passes.
Bringing in a young player with decent potential would be well worth what it would take to add him. The worst mistake the 49ers could make would be to head into the season without the necessary depth and have the safety position be a massive weakness.

John Lynch has not been scared to make aggressive or controversial moves. Sanders would bring a lot of media coverage with him. But he could also bring a skill set to the field that could help San Francisco.
It's just an idea at this point in time, but Cohn might be onto something. At the very least, the 49ers should be viewed as a possible landing spot for Sanders.
