Wide receiver Mike Evans is leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for another bay, as he's set to join NFC playoff contenders, the San Francisco 49ers.

The stunning news about the free-agent WR's pending signing arrived on a busy Monday afternoon, when many big moves occurred as the official period began for players to agree to deals with teams before officially signing.

According to ESPN's NFL insider, Adam Schefter, Evans will sign a three-year deal with San Francisco, though Schefter had not fully reported specific contract details at the time.

With the deal, San Francisco adds another target on the field for quarterback Brock Purdy to throw to as they look to contend with the likes of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams, among other NFC contenders.

Evans could agree to a deal with a new team on Monday afternoon and officially sign it on Wednesday, March 11, when the NFL's calendar year begins.

The surprising news also came hours after predictions that the NFC's Chicago Bears were the favorites to sign Evans as a free-agent receiver. San Francisco was second amongst the favorites and has now landed a six-time Pro Bowl WR.

Evans has spent the entirety of his NFL career with Tampa Bay, first joining in 2014 as the No. 7 overall pick in the draft. He's since gone on to become a two-time All-Pro and a Super Bowl champion while playing on the roster during Tom Brady's stint with the Bucs.

He’s participated in 176 games, with starts in all but one. Evans’ career numbers include 13,052 receiving yards and 108 touchdowns.

He'll leave behind a Tampa Bay receiving corps that was getting rather crowded, but is joining a great opportunity to contend in the playoffs again.

As of this report, additional details were forthcoming about Evans' deal, with the expectation that he will sign the deal on Wednesday.
