The San Francisco 49ers managed to keep a couple of things about head coach Kyle Shanahan this offseason.

Shanahan was involved in a vehicle crash on July 14, but the 49ers were able to keep the story out of the news for 11 days before the start of training camp.

Following the 49ers' 27-7 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday morning, another big secret was revealed.

Per Tom Pelissero of Netflix, the 49ers "quietly" signed Shanahan to a contract extension during the offseason.

"Stability in San Francisco: The 49ers quietly signed Kyle Shanahan to a contract extension in the offseason, sources tell The Ringer and Netflix Sports," Pelissero posted on X. "Shanahan was previously believed to be signed through 2027. Now, one of the NFL’s top coaches is locked up for years to come."

The terms of the contract were not released. It's not clear how long Shanahan is signed through.

Shanahan, 46, became the head coach of the 49ers in 2017. He's gone 83-67 during his time with San Francisco, leading the team to appearances in Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LVIII. In total, the 49ers have made four NFC championship appearances under Shanahan.

Shanahan rose to prominence as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. He was the Falcons offensive coordinator in Super Bowl LI, when Atlanta infamously blew a 28-3 lead over the New England Patriots. He's 0-3 in Super Bowls as a head coach and coordinator. He earned AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016.

The 49ers have locked down one of the better coaches and brightest offensive minds in the league. Shanahan's 49ers made the playoffs in five of his first nine seasons.

The one thing Shanahan has yet to conquer is winning the Super Bowl. After beating the Rams in Week 1, he has some around the league wondering if this could be the year.
