Here’s a plot twist few saw coming.
Days after firing former head coach Sean McDermott, the Buffalo Bills have been interviewing a slew of candidates to find his successor.
Offensive coordinator Joe Brady, former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, and Washington Commanders running backs coach Anthony Lynn are among the top candidates being considered for the position.

But on Friday, one slightly shocking and unconventional name popped up on the teams’ radar: former Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers.

“ESPN sources: former Colts QB and current St. Michael Catholic High School coach Philip Rivers is interviewing today for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
The 44-year-old Rivers surprised many when he came out of retirement near the end of the season to start three games for the Colts after Daniel Jones’ season-ending injury. It was the first time Rivers played a game since a 27-24 playoff loss to the Bills back on Jan. 9, 2021, which was coincidentally Josh Allen’s first-ever playoff win.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported back on Jan. 4 that Rivers was expected to drum up some interest during this head coaching cycle.

“Several sources say Rivers could end up as a head coach candidate this cycle and the current belief is that Rivers gets at least one opportunity to interview, possibly more,” Rapoport wrote.
“Sources say that teams have been doing research on Rivers as a candidate and making background calls. That happened last year, as well. Rivers previously has never been willing to engage—not with college or NFL teams—but his dramatic return to the NFL in December might have sparked his interest.”
Rivers has no NFL coaching experience, though he is the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School. He’s compiled a 43-15 record in five seasons—including a 13-1 mark this year—and he’s led the Cardinals to back-to-back 4A state semifinal appearances the last two years.
