After the Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday, they are considered a desirable landing spot for those currently getting interviews in the coaching carousel. According to a ranking by CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin and Garrett Podell, the Bills are considered the No. 1 head coaching vacancy in the NFL.
The Bills have been one of the best teams in the NFL since 2020. Thanks to the development of quarterback Josh Allen, they have made the playoffs for seven straight seasons, winning the AFC East in five straight seasons from 2020-24. Allen won the 2024 MVP, James Cook led the league in rushing in 2025, and overall, the Bills have the best point differential in the 2020s (plus-902).
Unfortunately, they had another tough loss in the NFL playoffs on Saturday, and the Bills have failed to reach the Super Bowl at any point in the Sean McDermott tenure. This season was arguably the most disappointing because many of the AFC's other elite quarterbacks — Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow — were not in the playoffs.

This season was the last straw. The Bills rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to force overtime. But Josh Allen threw an interception, his fourth turnover of the game, and two pass-interference penalties later, the Broncos were in position to kick the game-winning field goal from 23 yards out to win it 33-30.

That resulted in the Bills firing McDermott and promoting general manager Brandon Beane, who’s been criticized for his most recent drafts, to president of football operations.
“I have full faith in and have witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and have confidence in his abilities to lead our organization,” said team owner Terry Pegula. “Beane will be leading the search for a new head coach and will be working directly with Pegula and Pete Guelli, who will now serve as president of business operations, during the interview and hiring process.”
Beane will need to process the coaching interviews, including with Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady potentially, but as it stands, the Bills are considered one of the best coaching vacancies due to Allen and the ability to compete for a championship.
