The last time the Kansas City Chiefs had a 1,000-yard rusher was back in 2017 when Kareem Hunt ran for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns.

It was Patrick Mahomes’ rookie year and Alex Smith was the team’s starting quarterback. In the eight seasons since Mahomes took over as the starter, he’s never had a back hit the 1,000-yard plateau.

That could change next season with the Chiefs agreeing to terms with Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker, who rushed for 1,027 yards and five touchdowns with the Seattle Seahawks last season. The 25-year-old also rushed for 1,050 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie back in 2022.

Walker can't officially sign with the Chiefs until free agency officially starts on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

The closest Mahomes came to having a 1,000-yard rusher was Isiah Pacheco’s 935-yard, seven-touchdown season back in 2023. Now with a competent run game in place, the pressure is off Mahomes, who’s recovering from a torn ACL, to throw the ball 40-plus times per game.

Kansas City beat out the division rival Denver Broncos for Walker’s services.

“It’s a three-year deal worth up to $45 million for Kenneth Walker III, who becomes the highest-paid free agent deal for a running back in NFL history,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported.

In his four-year career, Walker totaled 3,555 yards rushing with 29 touchdowns along with 133 catches, 1,005 yards, and two touchdowns receiving.
