Patrick Mahomes' numbers have taken a dip over the last season or two, and so have his Kansas City Chiefs. Their bid for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl championship fell short in February when they lost in the big game to the Philadelphia Eagles, and he didn't make the Pro Bowl last season.
However, in a vacuum, Mahomes is still the best quarterback in the NFL. Some are counting out the Chiefs this year as far as Super Bowl contention, but others fully expect them to be back in the mix for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Prominent sports commentator Chris Broussard said on Fox Sports 1's "First Things First" that he's expecting big things from the two-time MVP this fall and winter.

"I think the light show is about to take place," Broussard said. "If Patrick Mahomes is who we have said he is, who I believe he is, which is the best quarterback we've ever seen, then I expect him to come out and have a great year. He's got all the motivation in the world. ... Obviously, he didn't play well in the Super Bowl. I'm not expecting the 50-touchdown year he had in his second year in the league, but I do think a 2020 season, where he threw for about 4,700 yards, 38 touchdowns, six picks, or when he won the MVP in 2022, 41 touchdowns, 12 picks. Somewhere around there."

Mahomes threw for 3,928 yards and 26 touchdowns last year, and in 2023, he had 4,183 passing yards and 27 touchdown passes, and during both seasons, his passer rating was under 94. Those numbers would be OK for a lot of other signal-callers across the league, but not for Mahomes, whom many have felt has been on a trajectory that could make him the greatest ever by the end of his career.

As recently as 2022, he went over 5,000 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes as the Chiefs won their second of the three Super Bowl titles they have won with him. It was their first season without star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and they may now have a couple of young studs at that position.
Rashee Rice will almost undoubtedly be suspended by the NFL, but he has shown signs of emerging. He had 79 catches, 938 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2023, and last year, he posted 288 yards and two touchdowns before a knee injury ended his season in Week 4.
Xavier Worthy had a promising rookie campaign last year, and the speedster wideout could be even better this fall.

By no means is Kansas City a lock to win the AFC this season. But it would be foolish to assume that the team is in some sort of decline, even after it was blown out in Super Bowl LIX six months ago.
