The Indianapolis Colts are officially signing Philip Rivers. The former NFL quarterback just turned 44 years old, and he will now be joining the team to help keep their postseason hopes alive.

Rivers will presumably be named the starter, as backup quarterback Riley Leonard deals with a knee ligament injury. Anthony Richardson also remains on IR, leading to the Colts bringing back the Pro Bowl veteran to take command of the offense.

The Colts were clearly in a bit of a crisis mode, as Daniel Jones tore his Achilles on Sunday. It was reported that the team was considering other options, but they have now gone with Rivers.

Rivers spent the majority of his career with the then-San Diego Chargers, and three more seasons when the team moved to Los Angeles.

In 2020, Rivers would play in his final season with the Colts. Despite it being his final season, he put together a very impressive season.

Rivers ended the 2020 season with 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also posted a 68.0 completion percentage. He clearly could have played more, but chose to walk away from the game.

Now, five years since retiring, the 44-year-old quarterback will return to the final stop in his illustrious career.

The Colts fell to 8-5 on the season, which now puts them a game behind the AFC South leaders, the Jacksonville Jaguars. They also dropped below the Wild Card threshold, as the Houston Texans take the No. 7 seed with an equal 8-5 record.

Simply put, the Colts needed to make a drastic move to ensure the team could keep pace in the AFC and remain in the playoff conversation.

Rivers is a consummate pro, and though he has not played in five years, he appears to be in game shape. The question will now be how effective he can be immediately.

The Colts will face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in a "must-win" game. The Seahawks may be at a disadvantage considering there has not been any recent tape on Rivers. Either way, Sunday should make for an exciting debut.
