Coming off such a successful 2024 season, the Washington Commanders find themselves in a tough spot as they prepare to build off their newfound momentum. Still in the midst of a standoff with a key player, one analyst feels it's time for a key member of the organization to step up.
The Commanders have been a major topic in the NFL for weeks now due to wide receiver Terry McLaurin. In light of failed negotiations on an extension, he requested a trade last week.
Despite these new developments, Washington continues to indicate they are not entertaining the idea of parting with McLaurin. Working out a new deal with the veteran wideout remains their top priority.

Stephen A. Smith calls Jayden Daniels to action regarding Terry McLaurin
As this ordeal drags on, countless members of the Commanders have given their thoughts. However, while on First Take last week, Stephen A. Smith zeroed in on quarterback Jayden Daniels. He implored the rising star to step up and urge the front office to get a deal done with McLaurin.
"Even though he's entering his second year, you shouldn't have a problem with the quarterback speaking up for him," Smith said. "I'm the face of the franchise, I'm the star, this is what we've built...Jayden Daniels might be wise to whisper in the organization's ear and say yo y'all, we need to take care of this."
Daniels would not have put together the impressive rookie season he had if not for having a player like McLaurin on the outside. The two quickly built a strong connection on the field, resulting in the veteran wideout catching a career-high 13 touchdowns in 2024.

Smith isn't wrong about Daniels feeling comfortable speaking out as a leader. That said, him approaching the front office might be a moot point.
This offseason, the Commanders showed they are eager to maximize the promising young talent they have in Daniels. They wasted no time upgrading the weapons around him to keep him on an upward trajectory. Washington is aware of what having McLaurin around means to Daniels, which is likely why they've taken the firm stance on not wanting to trade him.
With no end to this saga in sight, it's unclear if Daniels will get to work with his new receiver duo before taking the field for his sophomore season.
