The Baltimore Ravens looked like potential NFL contenders to start the season, with star quarterback Lamar Jackson back on the field and healthy.

However, things took an unfortunate turn when he exited last weekend's game against the Buffalo Bills with a thumb injury.

He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game, and following the loss to the Bills, it was reported that Jackson would undergo surgery on his fractured and dislocated thumb. He's expected to miss up to nine weeks after the surgery.

On Sunday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that sources told NFL Network that Jackson informed teammates that he plans to return to play later this season. According to sources, Jackson's message to teammates was basically to "just stay alive" while he recovers.

According to Rapoport, teammates who spoke to Jackson described his message as "energizing" and "exciting," especially after believing the star quarterback wouldn't return this season.

As Jackson recovers, the Ravens made a significant trade to address their needs at quarterback, bringing Jacoby Brissett over from the Arizona Cardinals. Brissett has thrown for 1,719 passing yards and 10 touchdowns with seven interceptions so far this season.

Due to the trade still being finalized, he was unable to start in Baltimore's recent home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Baltimore's backup, Tyler Huntley, was unable to start due to suffering a toe injury against the Bills. That led the Ravens to start third-string, undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano against the Jaguars.

As they await Brissett, Fagnano couldn't lead Baltimore to a victory, and the Ravens fell 33-10. They're now 4-5 and in last place in the AFC North, with the Cincinnati Bengals at the top, followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Ravens are certainly struggling, but they still have running back Derrick Henry at running back to help power the offense and take some pressure off Brissett. Henry was recently mentioned as a potential trade candidate, but Adam Schefter reported that Baltimore is telling interested teams he's not available.

Getting Jackson back at some point could be a boost if this team somehow remains in the hunt for a playoff spot, but a lot depends on how they can play in his absence.

Baltimore seemingly gets a favorable matchup on Monday, Nov. 16, when they face the winless Los Angeles Chargers on "Monday Night Football." However, they'll also have key matchups looming on the schedule against division rivals Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Cincinnati.
