After another loss in Week 5, the New England Patriots are considering a change at the quarterback position. Head coach Jerod Mayo may be leaning toward starting rookie quarterback Drake Maye over veteran Jacoby Brissett this coming weekend against the Houston Texans.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news on social media.

This move has been coming down the line and it could be happening sooner than people expected. The team has sputtered since winning in Week 1 and the offense has looked pretty stagnant during that time.

Brissett was never meant to be the starter for the entire season but rather to give Maye time to learn how to be a starter in the NFL. Oftentimes, coaches will throw rookie quarterbacks into the fire too early and it ruins their entire career.

Mayo likely wanted to wait a little later into the season for this move to occur but with the team losing four straight, a change is needed. When discussing the performance of Brissett, Mayo didn't hold back on the veteran.

Brissett finished Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins throwing 18-of-34 for 160 yards. New England scored just 10 points.

"It just wasn't good enough," Mayo told reporters Monday morning when asked how he would evaluate Brissett's performance. "I thought we played well enough defensively and on special teams to win the football game. Look, as the quarterback — and he understands this — he touches the ball on every single play and we didn't win the game or score enough points to win the game. I think he would echo that same sentiment that it wasn't good enough."

Something needs to change with the Patriots and putting Maye into the game could be the spark that they need. The rookie was highly-touted out of college and earned his way to becoming the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Now, the clock is ticking and Mayo could be making the change anytime this week.

"Every single day we're all being evaluated, and there's no difference now," Mayo said about potentially turning to Maye.

The rookie appeared in one game for New England this season, taking over for Brissett in garbage time against the New York Jets. He went 4-of-8, throwing for 22 yards. Maye also rushed the ball twice for 12 yards.

Mayo may elect to make the switch earlier in the week to prepare Maye for the start. And with the Patriots sitting with a record of 1-4, time is of the essence for this squad.
