The Raiders gave Josh McDaniels his second chance as an NFL head coach in 2022 but fired him before the end of the 2023 campaign. Las Vegas promoted his assistant coach, Antonio Pierce, to a permanent gig before the 2024 season. He was fired after a 4-13 year.

New minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek went big last offseason, trying to land the hottest name in the hiring cycle, Ben Johnson. After Johnson chose the Chicago Bears, the Raiders appeared to make a safe choice with Pete Carroll, but had to fire him after a 3-14 campaign in 2025.

The Raiders need to make sure their next head coach is a hit. It's an important offseason for the organization, set to take the No. 1 pick in the draft. If Las Vegas takes Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the team must build around and develop a franchise quarterback.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated thinks the Raiders are the best chance for Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to land a head coaching job this cycle. He thinks the connections to Brady and Spytek will help his case.

"Vegas is the one that flashes a bit to me because of his connections there," Breer wrote. "GM John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady, both former Michigan football players, are well acquainted with Minter, and have ties to him through the school. And Spytek and Brady’s history tells you that neither will be afraid to hire a defensive-minded head coach."

Chargers head coach John Harbaugh fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman after losing 16-3 to the New England Patriots in the wild-card round. He could lose another top assistant this offseason, but this time to an AFC West rival.

Minter's knowledge of the AFC West would be a plus for the Raiders, who would hope his defensive mind could stop the high-powered offenses of the Chargers, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. The situation would be similar to what the Seattle Seahawks did when they hired Mike Macdonald.
