The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines on Saturday by announcing the hiring of longtime NFL coach Mike McCarthy, who interviewed for the vacancy earlier this week and has strong ties to the city, having been born and raised in Pittsburgh.
McCarthy will now get the opportunity to coach the team he grew up admiring, following two previous head coaching stints — 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and a more recent tenure with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 to 2024.
Ahead of Sunday’s AFC and NFC conference championship games, the ESPN NFL Countdown crew reacted to the news. Legendary wide receiver Randy Moss was among those sharing his thoughts, and he appeared to believe it was a strong hire for the Steelers.

"Everywhere Mike McCarthy has been, the offensive production has always skyrocketed," Moss said. "If you go back to his time in Dallas with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott, their best season was with McCarthy as the play caller.
Now, about Aaron Rodgers — I don’t know what the future holds for him, whether he’s coming back or not. But Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy had an incredible run together; Rodgers was a two-time MVP under McCarthy as his head coach and play caller. One more year with McCarthy? I don’t know what Rodgers has left in the tank, but it could be worth it, especially considering Pittsburgh’s offense struggles and really needs a lot of help."

More news: Stephen A. Smith Reacts to Steelers’ Hiring of Mike McCarthy as Head Coach
The Pittsburgh Steelers have never fired a head coach, and since 1970, they’ve had only three, with the most recent being Mike Tomlin. Tomlin made the unexpected decision to step down after 19 seasons with the organization, following their first-round playoff loss this season to the Houston Texans.
The Steelers never had a losing season under Tomlin, so McCarthy certainly has big shoes to fill. However, he’s no stranger to winning football, compiling a career record of 174–112 and capturing a Super Bowl in the 2010–11 season with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback in Green Bay.
