Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes has responded to fans calling for him to embrace his darker side once again. "The American Nightmare" addressed the topic directly after old clips from his time as a heel outside of WWE resurfaced online.
The discussion began when a fan shared a throwback clip of Rhodes from his time in TNA Wrestling. The fan suggested that a future heel run for Rhodes in WWE would be legendary.
Another fan replied, recalling that version of Cody's character and admitting they would enjoy seeing it return now, despite acknowledging the character was unpleasant.

Rhodes himself entered the conversation, replying to the fan comments. He downplayed the significance of his past heel work, suggesting that fans often overrate that period of his career. He pointed out that his greatest successes have come as a babyface.

“😂 people cite this clip and the me spitting one and assume it was far better than it was 3 biggest gates of all time didn’t happen with the jerk in this vid It was a fun step on the journey though!” Rhodes wrote.

His response indicates that while he enjoyed exploring that character, he recognizes that his current persona has led to far greater achievements, including headlining major events and becoming the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Earlier this year, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson revealed that he had pushed for WWE to turn Rhodes heel, but the company rejected the idea. Rhodes' recent comments align with that decision, showing he understands the value of his current role as arguably the company's top babyface.
While some fans may continue to clamor for a darker edge from "The American Nightmare," Rhodes appears comfortable and confident in his current position. He has evolved into one of WWE's most marketable and beloved stars, connecting deeply with the audience.
