Texas Mother Records Call With Son to Help Police Charge Him With Murder

A mother in Texas helped police charge her teenage son with murder by recording calls and handing over a cache of incriminating texts and Facebook messages.

The trail led Austin police to arrest Christopher Michael Garcia, 17, for allegedly fatally stabbing Misael Sanchez, 19, during a fight east of the city last month.

Police said they received a call just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16, reporting two males fighting with Sanchez at Cameron Road and McKie Drive.

The witness told officers Sanchez had been stabbed by one of the men before both fled northbound in a blue sedan, according to a press release issued by the Austin Police Department (ADP).

Sanchez died at the scene despite the best efforts of Austin-Travis County EMS.

The following morning, the ADP said they received a call from a woman identifying herself as the mother of Garcia.

The woman told officers she believed her son killed Sanchez and provided an odd text message exchange she said she had with her son the previous day, KXAN reports.

Identified only as "Blanca," she reportedly told investigators she received a text from Garcia at around 6:40 p.m. which read "Luv u mom," just three minutes after Sanchez was pronounced dead.

Another message allegedly read "just inxace" and it was followed by a Facebook message reading "I killed Flaco," according to the news outlet.

The mother said she found the exchange peculiar because she and her son did not have a good relationship.

After handing over screenshots of the messages to police, the woman agreed to record a phone conversation with her son where he referred to Sanchez as "Flaco."

In the call, Garcia told his mother the pair had been hanging out on the afternoon of February 16 when an argument over synthetic marijuana escalated.

According to Garcia, he said he refused to help Sanchez smoke because he would "start causing problems" and reportedly recounted warning Sanchez that he was "straight stabbing people today."

It was then when Garcia said Sanchez hit his vehicle with rocks and a fire extinguisher before a friend of Garcia's, known as "Twin," showed up and pointed a gun at Sanchez, according to Garcia's account.

The scuffle ended when Garcia said he ran towards the pair with a knife and plunged the blade into Sanchez's side.

Parts of this recount were corroborated by a witness who told police he saw Sanchez break the car window with a bag of rocks before another Hispanic male got out of a vehicle and a fight began.

After the violent confrontation, Garcia is said to have taken a photo of Sanchez lying on the ground with his eyes open and sent it to friends.

Garcia was arrested by the Fugitive Apprehension Unit on Tuesday, February 23, and charged with first-degree felony homicide, according to a release from the Texas Attorney General.

The 17-year-old was booked into the Travis County Jail.
