TikTok Launches In-App Shopping in Partnership With Shopify

TikTok, the social media platform favored by young people across the globe, is moving into e-commerce.

The social media site has just announced that they have a partnership with Shopify so that users can make in-app purchases.

The company recently announced that Shopify merchants who have TikTok For Business accounts will be able to add shopping tab profiles and sync with the products they are selling so that people can buy their offerings directly via a digital storefront.

This shopping pilot is currently available in both the U.S. and the U.K., and in the upcoming weeks some merchants in Canada will also be trialing the system.

It is also set to become available in other regions in a few months.

One of the first companies to adopt the model is Kylie Cosmetics, the brainchild of the youngest Kardashian sister, Kylie Jenner.

In a statement on August 24, Jenner said: "I have so much fun creating TikTok videos, that's why I'm excited for Kylie Cosmetics to be one of the first to let customers shop directly on our TikTok!"

Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify, announced the news by stating: "Creators are paving the way for a new kind of entrepreneurship where content, community, and commerce are key.

"By enabling new in-app shopping experiences and product discovery on TikTok for the first time, Shopify is powering the creator economy on one of the fastest-growing social and entertainment platforms in the world. We are excited to help this next generation of entrepreneurs connect with their audiences in more ways—and with TikTok as a visionary partner."

The new partnership also means that Shopify merchants will be able to tag their products in their TikTok videos. This means that users of the TikTok app will be able to click on tagged products and this will take them to the merchant's storefront so that they can buy the items.

This is not the first collaboration between TikTok and Shopify. In October 2020, the e-commerce company made it possible for sellers to manage their TikTok advertising campaigns from within the app. Shopify merchants are also now able to use a platform called TikTok Pixel to track their marketing performance online.

There is a lot of potential for brands to sell on TikTok as it has a whopping 732 million monthly active users worldwide and was the most downloaded app of 2020, surpassing Facebook.

Blake Chandlee, president of global business solutions at TikTok, said in the announcement: "Our community has transformed shopping into an experience that's rooted in discovery, connection, and entertainment, creating unparalleled opportunities for brands to capture consumers' attention.

"TikTok is uniquely placed at the center of content and commerce, and these new solutions make it even easier for businesses of all sizes to create engaging content that drives consumers directly to the digital point of purchase. We're thrilled to be expanding our partnership with Shopify and making TikTok more accessible than ever for their merchants."
