Toddler Dies in Accidental Shooting After Handling Gun: Police

A 2-year-old boy in Tennessee who accidentally shot himself with a handgun has died from his injuries, according to police.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) was alerted about a shooting in the 400 block of English Drive in Talbott at about 8:41 a.m. on March 23.

According to ABC affiliate WATE-TV, officers found Colton Lee Gridley had been shot and believed a gun went off in his hands as he played with it.

Sheriff Jeff Coffey told the outlet: "We got that by a witness from inside the home that the child was handling the gun at the time it discharged."

Gridley was initially taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, in Knoxville, and was later taken to the East Tennessee Children's Hospital where he died of his injuries on March 30.

In a March 30 Facebook post, the sheriff's office said: "It's with great sadness that Colton Lee Gridley, the two-year-old who was handling a handgun and was shot, has passed away at East Tennessee Children's Hospital earlier today.

"The investigation into this incident continues. We ask everyone to keep this family and all the first responders who responded to this tragic event in your prayers."

An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, according to WATE-TV.

Newsweek has contacted the JCSO for comment.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, six children aged between 0 to 11 have been fatally shot in the state of Tennessee since January 1 this year.

The database also found that 137 people across the state had been killed as a result of gun violence so far this year.

Newsweek has reported on numerous cases where people have been accidentally shot after children found firearms.

Earlier this month a toddler accidentally shot his mother dead while sitting in a car in Illinois, WGN-TV reported.

Dolton police said the shooting happened in a Food for Less parking lot in Greenwood and Sibley Boulevard. The woman was later taken to hospital for treatment, although she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

On Christmas Eve in 2021, a 2-year-old died after accidentally firing a gun he was handling.

Officers found the child had been shot at a home in Independence, Missouri, at about 4:30 p.m. after they were alerted about a shooting.

Despite being initially told the child had been killed during a drive-by shooting, police later determined the toddler was handling a gun.

Authorities pronounced the boy dead several hours after the shooting happened, according to local station KCTV.
