Tony Awards Winners: 'Company' Wins Big as 'A Strange Loop' Makes History

The Tony Awards celebrate the best of the best in the theater world, and the 2022 ceremony saw history being made by A Strange Loop.

Held on Sunday, June 12, at the Radio City Music Hall, the celebration was hosted by West Side Story's Ariana DeBose.

A Strange Loop was awarded the Tony for best musical after also previously getting a Pulitzer prize in 2020. Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton was the most recent musical to earn both awards.

Michael R. Jackson's drama tells the story of a Black gay man writing a show about a Black gay man, and he also won an award for best book.

A Strange Loop also saw Jennifer Hudson score an EGOT when the musical won the top prize as she is a producer on the show. Hudson also has an Emmy for producing Baba Yaga, several Grammys, and an Oscar for Dreamgirls.

Company also saw history being made, after director Marianne Elliott won for her work on the musical and became the only woman to ever win three Tonys for directing.

The Company revival saw the story being gender-swapped, and Elliott thanked the late Stephen Sondheim for letting her put a woman "front and center" in the show, and she also dedicated her award to everyone fighting to keep theaters open.

Patti LuPone won best featured actress in a musical for her work in the revival and Matt Doyle also won for best featured actor in a musical for it, as a whole Company won five awards at the Tonys.

Iconic composer Sondheim died in November 2021 of cardiovascular disease at the age of 91, and he was honored at the awards show with a special performance by Bernadette Peters, who sang his song "Children Will Listen."

Meanwhile The Lehman Trilogy, a three-and-a-half hour production about a family's fortunes during the 2008 financial crash, received five Tony awards.

Simon Russell Beale won the best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play for The Lehman Trilogy, while the Broadway show won best play and Sam Mendes earned the prize for best direction of a play.

Myles Frost won the award for best lead actor in a musical for playing Michael Jackson in musical MJ, which is Frost's Broadway debut.
