Pretti’s Parents: ‘Sickening Lies’ From Administration About Son’s Death
The parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti issued a statement to CNN on Saturday condemning what they called "sickening lies" told by the Trump administration about their son's death. Michael and Susan Pretti said their 37-year-old son, was protecting a woman when he was fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation.
"Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump's murdering and cowardly ICE thugs," the parents wrote in their statement. "He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed."
The family's account directly contradicts the Department of Homeland Security's narrative that Pretti approached Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and "violently resisted" when officers attempted to disarm him.
The Pretti family described their son as "a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital."
They emphasized his dedication to making a difference in the world and called him a hero whose final act was protecting a woman. "I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman," the parents wrote, concluding: "Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man."

Pam Bondi Sets Conditions for ICE Withdrawal in Letter to Walz
Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a warning letter to Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Saturday, demanding the state take three specific actions before federal immigration agents would consider reducing their presence in Minneapolis.
The letter comes after a Border Patrol agent fatally shot Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, during a federal immigration enforcement operation that has sparked widespread protests and calls from state officials for federal agents to leave.
Bondi outlined three conditions in the letter: Minnesota must share all Medicaid and food assistance program data with the federal government to investigate fraud, repeal sanctuary policies and allow all detention facilities to cooperate fully with ICE, and allow the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division access to voter rolls to ensure compliance with federal law. "You and your office must restore the rule of law, support ICE officers, and bring an end to the chaos in Minnesota," Bondi wrote.
The attorney general cited a 1,300 percent increase in violence against ICE officers and a 3,200 percent increase in vehicular attacks against federal agents as justification for continued operations.
Bondi blamed Minnesota officials' rhetoric for the violence, writing: "The State of Minnesota has refused to enforce the law, and the consequences are heartbreaking." She specifically called out Walz for referring to federal law enforcement as "Trump's modern-day Gestapo" and criticized Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for saying "ICE: Get the f*** out of Minneapolis."

Newsom Demands Noem Resign, Bovino Be Fired After Fatal Shooting
California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, issued a scathing statement on Saturday calling for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and the firing of Customs and Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino following the fatal shooting of ICU nurse and U.S. citizen Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minneapolis by federal agents.
"Kristi Noem must RESIGN. Greg Bovino must be FIRED," Newsom wrote on X, adding: "Suspend the LAWLESS mass deportation raids nationwide NOW — ICE is no longer just deporting dangerous criminals."
The California governor called for border patrol agents to be sent back to the border and demanded an end to what he described as "the militarization of ICE + the sick racial profiling." Newsom's comprehensive list of demands included ending "perverse cash incentives that are bounties to perpetrate Trump's cruel agenda," requiring "thorough, real background checks for everyone, and 2+ years of training before even setting foot in the field," and calling on authorities to "INVESTIGATE and PROSECUTE every single federal agent who is breaking the law."
The statement escalates an ongoing public clash between Newsom and Bovino that began earlier this week when the California governor compared Bovino's trench coat to Nazi "SS garb" during remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Bovino defended the coat on NewsNation, saying it is standard-issue Border Patrol winter uniform he has owned since the late 1990s and has worn publicly for years, including at the 2021 swearing-in ceremony of then-Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus. "I received nothing but compliments on that coat," Bovino said. "Fast forward a few years to this administration, all of a sudden it's a problem."
A long list of Democratic lawmakers has demanded to move forward with impeaching Noem on Saturday.

Minnesota Officials Unite Against Federal Agents
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced Saturday that his office will go to court Monday to challenge what he called the "illegal and unconstitutional occupation" of Minnesota cities by federal immigration agents. Ellison's statement came hours after Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse who served veterans, was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents during the Trump administration's immigration enforcement in the state.
"I share the intense grief and anger of so many that another Minnesotan — Alex Pretti, 37 years old, an ICU nurse who served veterans — was fatally shot during the Trump Administration's Operation Metro Surge," Ellison wrote on X. "On Monday, January 26, my office and I will be in court arguing to end this illegal and unconstitutional occupation of our cities and the terror and violence it's inflicting. This must stop. Now."
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat, joined Ellison in condemning federal operations, writing on X: "Donald Trump and all your lieutenants who ordered this ICE surge: watch the horrific video of the killing today. The world is watching. Thousands of citizens stopped and harassed. Local police no longer able to do their work. Kids hiding. Schools closed. Get ICE out of Minnesota NOW." Klobuchar also called on Republican lawmakers: "And Republicans in congress: Stop your silence and stop being complicit."
Klobuchar joined a group of city and state leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Gov. Tim Walz, in demanding ICE leave Minnesota.

American Nurses Association Demands Investigation Into Death of Alex Pretti
The American Nurses Association issued a statement Saturday condemning the fatal shooting of registered nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis, calling for a "full, unencumbered investigation" into the incident. The nursing advocacy organization extended condolences to Pretti's loved ones, colleagues, and the broader community while expressing deep concern about violence affecting healthcare workers.
"ANA condemns violence in our communities. The seriousness of this incident and others demand transparency and accountability," the organization wrote in a statement released from its Silver Spring, Maryland headquarters. The group urged that investigation findings be shared "promptly and clearly so Alex's loved ones and the public have answers."
The statement highlighted broader concerns about safety for nurses, noting that one in four nurses already experience workplace violence. "As incidents with federal law enforcement continue to rise across the country, we are deeply concerned for the safety of nurses, both on the job and in the communities they serve," the organization stated.
The American Nurses Association emphasized the mission of nursing professionals in its statement: "Nurses are advocates for the safety and well-being of their communities. They enter this profession to heal, to protect human life, and to show up for people in their most vulnerable moments."
Pretti was an intensive care unit nurse whose state nursing license remains active through March 2026. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed Pretti had no serious criminal history and was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.

Alex Pretti GoFundMe Surges Past $160K
A GoFundMe campaign titled "Alex Pretti is an American Hero" has raised over $160,000 from thousands of donations as of Saturday evening, far exceeding its initial $20,000 goal. If funds cannot be transferred to Pretti's family for any reason, the total amount will be directed to the Immigrant Defense Project, a nonprofit that provides litigation, advocacy, and community-defense resources to help immigrants defend their rights and fight deportation.

Minnesota, DHS Officials at Odds Over Fatal Border Patrol Shooting
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has highlighted a growing rift between Minnesota officials and the Trump administration following multiple shootings by federal officers in the Minneapolis area this month, two of which were fatal.
The latest incident on Saturday involved the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse, by a Border Patrol agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both Democrats, appealed to the Trump administration on Saturday to remove federal agents from the city, where officers have been seen using heavy-handed tactics on the streets for several weeks. Senior administration officials rejected those calls, with Noem criticizing state and city leadership.
"The Minnesota governor and the Minneapolis mayor need to take a long, hard look in the mirror," Noem said to reporters on Saturday during a press conference. "They need to evaluate their rhetoric, their conversations, and their encouragement of such violence against our citizens and our law enforcement officers."
Noem compared Minnesota unfavorably to other states, stating: "We don't have this problem in Texas or in Florida because those individuals in those states work with us, and they make sure that they keep peace and calm while they bring criminals to justice. In Minneapolis, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, they instead choose violence."
Attorney General Pam Bondi indicated that the Trump administration would increase the federal law enforcement presence in Minneapolis, with additional officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) set to be deployed.
Later on Saturday evening, Noem defended the Border Patrol officer involved in the shooting, blaming Pretti's actions. "An individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun," she said at a press conference in Washington, DC.
"The officers attempted to disarm this individual but the armed suspect reacted violently. Fearing for his life and for the lives of his fellow officers around him, an agent fired defensive shots." She said Pretti had "two magazines with ammunition in them that held dozens of rounds" and no identification, adding: "This looks like a situation where an individual arrived at the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement."

Gun Owners of America Calls for Investigation Into Minneapolis Shooting
Gun Owners of America has called for a complete investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis on Saturday, while condemning comments from California Attorney General Bill Essayli about the justification for shooting concealed carry license holders.
The gun rights organization wrote on X that it is "saddened by the loss of life" and called for the Department of Justice to conduct a "complete, transparent, and prompt investigation so the public can fully understand what occurred and maintain confidence in the rule of law." The statement comes as details continue to emerge about the shooting of Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse who was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.
Gun Owners of America specifically condemned comments from Essayli, writing that federal agents are not "highly likely" to be "legally justified" in "shooting" concealed carry licensees who approach while lawfully carrying a firearm. The organization emphasized that "the Second Amendment protects Americans' right to bear arms while protesting—a right the federal government must not infringe upon."
The statement also defended federal immigration enforcement operations, calling on "the Left" to "stop antagonizing" Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CPB) agents "who are taking criminals off the streets and play a crucial role in protecting communities and upholding the rule of law."

Colleague Remembers Alex Pretti as ‘Good Kind Person’ Who Helped Veterans
A colleague of Alex Jeffrey Pretti expressed grief and anger on social media following the 37-year-old nurse's death, remembering him as a dedicated healthcare worker who cared for critically ill veterans.
Dimitri Drekonja, MD, MS, wrote on Bluesky that Pretti was a colleague at the VA who was initially hired to recruit for a clinical trial before becoming an ICU nurse. "He was a good kind person who lived to help and these f****** executed him. White. Hot. Rage," Drekonja wrote following the announcement of Pretti's death on Saturday.
Drekonja later posted a picture of Pretti with a message reflecting on their time working together. "Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude," Drekonja wrote. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem Says Agent Was ‘Fearing For His Life’
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said during a press conference that the fatal shooting on Saturday was a "tragedy" but preventable and pointed to Minnesota officials’ rhetoric about federal enforcement officers.
She said that Alex Jeffery Pretti, 37, “approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun” and that officers “attempted to disarm this individual, but the armed suspect reacted violently.”
The agent, according to the secretary, “fearing for his life and the officers around him” then fired “defensive shots.”
Noem said Pretti also had two magazines with ammunition on him, saying, “This looks like a situation where an individual arrived on the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement.” She later said during the press conference that he “attacked those officers.”
Noem confirmed Pretti was pronounced dead on the scene. “He wasn’t there to peacefully protest, he was there to perpetuate violence.” She said he “committed an act of domestic terrorism.”
She also said that “we don’t have this problem in Texas or in Florida,” but instead Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey “want this lawlessness to continue.” The administration has repeatedly clashed with Minneapolis leaders over immigration efforts in the state.
Noem asked for all leaders in Minneapolis to “work with us” and noted that DHS has arrested “thousands” of individuals in the city who have “criminal convictions and are in this country illegally.”
The DHS secretary said the department is “following the exact same protocols we always have,” with regards to an investigation into Pretti’s death.

O'Hara said the move was made to address "volatility and rising public safety risks."
State and local law enforcement have deployed less lethal munitions to deter demonstrators and "prevent further violence and damage," according to O'Hara.

He was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry and only had traffic tickets, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.
DHS said the man was armed with a loaded 9 mm gun when he had a violent interaction with a CBP agent.
"The killing of another American citizen in Minneapolis by federal agents this morning is outrageous, shameful and indefensible," Pelosi said in the post on X. "There must be justice and accountability for this state violence masquerading as 'public safety.' Enough."
"Let us all pray for our country," Pelosi concluded.

Congressman Says Agent Involved in Shooting Needs to Be Removed from Duty
Congressman Seth Magaziner, a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security addressed the deadly shooting of man in Minneapolis Saturday, demanding that the agent involved be removed from duty.
In a series of posts on X, Magazine also said that videos of the shooting need to be made public.
"As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, I am monitoring news of the latest killing of a protestor by federal agents in Minneapolis. Three things are immediately clear:
-All videos of the incident must immediately be made public and agents on the scene removed from duty pending an investigation.
-The ICE and Border Patrol surge into Minnesota and Maine must end immediately. Too many people, including children and US citizens, have been hurt, imprisoned, had their homes broken into and civil rights violated. These operations are making everyday people less safe.
-The Senate should reject the DHS funding bill next week until significant reforms are added to the bill. We need a complete overhaul before more people are needlessly killed."

Former ICE Agent Breaks Down Alex Jeffrey Petti Shooting
Statement from Javad M. Khazaeli, Founding Partner at Khazaeli Wyrsch, LLC, former ICE National Security Prosecutor, and Board Member of Immigrants’ List
“The tragic shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an American citizen, is a case study in what happens when we put federal agents in civilian situations without proper training or expectations of accountability.
The vast majority of agents on the ground in Minneapolis right now are either brand new hires, or are Customs and Border Protection agents that spent their career checking passports. They are not trained to operate in a civilian areas, particularly in a high-stakes crowd setting like we are seeing in Minneapolis. After the Renee Goode shooting, the Trump DOJ has been clear: it will not investigate when immigration officers kill citizens. Untrained armed officers who know they will not be held accountable will inevitably use excessive force and kill people.”
Video Analysis
- Properly trained officers do not resort to a multi-officer beatdown like we see in this video. At that point, there is no question that they were not trying to take Mr. Pretti safely into custody; the officers are simply beating him in retaliation.
- We do not know yet what caused the first shot. It is clear from the videos, however, that Mr. Pretti immediately went down and stopped moving after the first shot. Then there is a pause followed by multiple shots at a person who was already incapacitated and was not a threat. That is the definition of excessive force.

The Minnesota National Guard has activated additional troops in Minneapolis following the deadly shooting of a civilian by federal agents Saturday.
During a press conference, Democratic Governor Tim Walz explained that more troops were needed following the death of a 37-year-old man outside a donut shop.
"You ask us for peace, and we give it and we get shot in the face on the streets coming out of a donut shop," Walz said.
Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke, the Adjutant General for the Minnesota National Guard explained that soldiers have been prepared for rapid response in the Minneapolis-Metro area for days.
"We have a request from the Hennepin County sheriff to support them, and that is to help them free up additional resources for other work that they need to do," Manke said, adding that they have begun coordinating that deployment this morning following the shooting.
**"**The first area of support will be, assisting them with, the requirement to provide security, to the Whipple building. So, we'll be helping them there. And then we are in parallel planning with, other organizations within the state of Minnesota to include the State Patrol, the Minnesota DNR and other local agencies, to render assistance if requested."
While Manke said that he wouldn't share the number of soldiers they have ready, he believes "the number that we have is, adequate for the request that we have right now."
"And I will also tell you that we are bringing more resources, that will be able to respond in a timely manner, that are not fully mobilized yet," he continued.
"We are mobilizing more soldiers as we talk at this time. I'd like not to get on the specific numbers for an operational security standpoint, but, right now we have all the resources to meet the requests that we have," he said.

Democratic Governor Tim Walz said that DHS left the scene to the Minneapolis Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol Saturday.
Bob Jacobson, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, said that the State Police Department "did not have enough resources to stay at the scene of the deadly shooting."
"I'll tell you right now is that we no longer have BCA agents for public safety, State Patrol, or Minneapolis on the ground at that crime scene," he explained, adding that following the shooting, a surge of people came to the area.
Gregory Bovino, Border Control Commander said during a separate press conference Saturday that about "200 rioters arrived at the scene" following the shooting.
"We did not have enough resources to be able to hold that ground safely. And we had to leave that scene, because of, the number of people that were available and the safety of those in the public and the safety of our teams," Jacobsen said, adding "At that time, we're not able to hold that scene to do a crime scene investigation."
"And as you saw this week, they killed a man, created chaos, pushed down protesters, threw gas indiscriminately and then left the scene. And then we're left to clean up," Walz said.

The governor said he called the White House today to tell them that the investigation will be handled by Minnesota, saying, "State will handle it. Period."
He said he spoke twice with the White House, first with the President's Chief of Staff to tell them to remove federal agents. Walz said the second call was to let them know that Minnesota would handle the shooting investigation.
"They want chaos," Walz cautioned, adding, that the state and its people cannot "meet violence with violence."

Bovino Says Mayor, Police Chief “Omitting The Fact” That Subject Had Weapon
During a press conference Saturday, Gregory Bovino, Border Control Commander, said that Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara were "omitting the fact" that the subject fatally shot by a federal agent had a loaded weapon.
"We will not allow violence against our law enforcement officers, " Bovino said, noting that coordination is needed.
"We need state and local health, state and local law enforcement to help us coordinate to get violent criminals off the street. Mayor Frye and Chief O'Hare, just a few minutes ago did the opposite of that by omitting the fact that the suspect had a gun and magazines full of ammunition in what looks like a situation again, where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement," Bovino continued.
Bovino showed an image of the weapon and said, "Let's take a look at the gun. you can see the gun here on the screen there. That individual possessed. It appears to be a semiautomatic high-capacity type."

Miller replied, “An assassin tried to murder federal agents and this is your response.”

President Trump Reacts to Minnesota Shooting
President Donald Trump reacted to the deadly shooting of a man in Minneapolis Saturday on Truth Social with a picture of the gun that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the subject had.
"This is the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go – What is that all about? Where are the local Police? Why weren’t they allowed to protect ICE Officers? The Mayor and the Governor called them off? It is stated that many of these Police were not allowed to do their job, that ICE had to protect themselves — Not an easy thing to do!" the President said.
He continued on to list different allegations of fraud against the state and its leaders.
" Why does Ilhan Omar have $34 Million Dollars in her account? And where are the Tens of Billions of Dollars that have been stolen from the once Great State of Minnesota? We are there because of massive Monetary Fraud, with Billions of Dollars missing, and Illegal Criminals that were allowed to infiltrate the State through the Democrats’ Open Border Policy. We want the money back, and we want it back, NOW. Those Fraudsters who stole the money are going to jail, where they belong! This is no different than a really big Bank Robbery."
"Much of what you’re witnessing is a COVER UP for this Theft and Fraud," Trump continued.
"The Mayor and the Governor are inciting Insurrection, with their pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric! Instead, these sanctimonious political fools should be looking for the Billions of Dollars that has been stolen from the people of Minnesota, and the United States of America."
"LET OUR ICE PATRIOTS DO THEIR JOB! 12,000 Illegal Alien Criminals, many of them violent, have been arrested and taken out of Minnesota. If they were still there, you would see something far worse than you are witnessing today!"
In a second post shortly after, the president said, "AMONG OTHER THINGS, THIS IS A “COVER UP” FOR THE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM THE ONCE GREAT STATE (BUT SOON TO BE GREAT AGAIN!) OF MINNESOTA! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP"

CAIR-MN Releases Statements on Latest Federal Agent Shooting
In a statement, CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said:
“These repeated shootings represent a dangerous pattern that has deeply shaken public trust. When lethal force is used again and again in our neighborhoods, the investigation cannot be left solely to the same federal system that carried out the operation. Minnesota families deserve a process that is local, independent, civilian-led, and fully transparent.”
“CAIR-MN stands with the families and neighbors impacted by these shootings and will continue to advocate for justice, transparency, and the protection of civil rights for all Minnesotans.”
CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
"We call on Mayor Frey to order the Minneapolis Police Department to take control of the scene of the latest deadly ICE shooting, launch an independent criminal probe, and protect peaceful protesters at the scene from ICE violence.
"Calling for ICE to leave is not enough. This shooting happened on a city street in the jurisdiction of the Minneapolis law enforcement and they must lead an independent investigation into what appears to be another horrific, unnecessary execution of a Minneapolis resident.
"ICE should immediately end its deadly and disastrous siege of Minnesota and turn over all evidence and information about this shooting and the prior shooting of Rene Good to local authorities."
