Who Are Larry King's 7 Ex-Wives? Shawn Southwick, Alene Akins, Annette Kaye

Iconic broadcaster Larry King died on Saturday at 87-years-old. Throughout his life and lengthy career, the popular talk show host was married eight times to seven women.

King first married to his high school sweetheart before beginning his broadcasting career in the early 1950s. At the time of his death, he was not married.

In a February 2020 interview with People, he explained his frequent marriages. "[I]n my head, I'm not a marrying guy. When I grew up, nobody lived together. If you fell in love, you got married. And so I married the ones that I loved. But what I loved at 20 is not what I loved at 30 and what I loved at 30 is not what I loved at 40," he said.

Shawn Southwick

King's most recent spouse and longest partner was Shawn King (neé Southwick), with whom he had two sons. King married Southwick in 1997, and separated from her in June 2019, filing for divorce two months later. In a 2019 interview with The Daily Mail TV, Southwick found out about the divorce filing from a reporter calling her. "I was crushed. I had no idea that this was happening," she said.

Speaking to People, King said that age and religious differences were contributing factors to their split. "We overcame a lot [the couple had separated in 2010], but eventually it became a ships passing in the night situation," he said.

Julie Alexander

King's sixth wife was a businesswoman named Julie Alexander, and the two became engaged after very few dates after meeting at a charity event in 1989. The pair divorced in 1992, citing busy careers. However, Alexander told Inside Edition that she suspected infidelities from King. "I never saw him cheat on me, but something was going on," she said in the 2010 interview.

Despite occasional rumors about him seeing other women, King told People that he hasn't ever cheated on his wives.

Sharon Lepore

According to People, Lepore was a production assistant when she met King. The two were married from 1976 to 1983. Lepore was also a former math teacher.

Alene Akins

Akins, who was a former Playboy bunny, and King were married on two occasions: first from 1961 to 1963, and then again from 1968 to 1971. King adopted Akins' son Andy during the first marriage, and she gave birth to their daughter Chaia during the second marriage. Akins died in 2017, and King called her a "grand lady" in a tweet. Both Andy and Chaia also passed in the summer of 2020, of a sudden heart attack and lung cancer respectively. "Losing them feels so out of order. No parent should have to bury a child," King wrote in a Facebook post at the time.

So very saddened over the passing of Alene Akins, who died peacefully with our children Chaia and Andy by her side. She was a grand lady.

Mickey Sutphin

Between his marriages to Akins, King was married to Sutphin between 1964 and 1967. The couple had a daughter together.

Annette Kaye

King's second marriage to Annette Kaye lasted less than a year. She and King have a son, Larry Jr., together. In a 2009 interview with journalist Anderson Cooper, King spoke about not meeting Larry Jr. until his son was in his 30s. "That was extraordinary. Let me tell you. To sort of know I had a child. Probably I did. But I wasn't sure. And then to get the realization that I did. And then he turns out to be one of the great people -- one of the great people I know," he said.

Freda King

King's first marriage was to his high school sweetheart at 18-years-old in 1952. The wedding was supposedly annulled due to their parents' disapproval the following year.
