Who Won Survivor 42?

In the end, Maryanne Oketch was crowned the champion of Survivor 42.

To come out on top, Maryanne survived three Tribal Councils, and two immunity channels and succeeded at an advantage hunt.

The finale began with the five contestants stranded on a new beach, where they had to undertake a puzzle challenge with Mike coming out on top. In a surprising move, Mike played his idol for Maryanne, but she had her own idol. As a result, Lindsay was eliminated at the tribal council.

The final four then faced another challenge, with Romeo winning the next round.

As a result of his victory, Romeo got to choose the Top 3 survivors, opting to save Maryanne. Mike and Jonathan then had to go head to head in a fire-making challenge, with Mike narrowly winning the challenge.

Maryanne, Mike, and Romeo were Survivor 42's Top 3 and got the chance to make a case to the jury on why they deserve to win.

When it came down to the jury casting their votes on who should be crowned the winner, Maryanne managed to take seven out of the eight jury votes, with Top 5 contestant Jonathan casting his vote for Mike.

Maryanne is the first Black woman in Survivor since Vecepia Towery in Season 4, which aired over 20 years ago.

Speaking to Parade.com, she described her win as "so powerful."

She reflected: "It's so wild that it's exactly almost 20 years since a Black woman won, and I'm the second one to do so. And I think the thing that makes it so powerful is because, as the casts get more diverse, you're going to see more firsts of people or "first in x number of years."

"For example, Mike is Puerto Rican. I don't think there's anyone win who's Puerto Rican since Sandra [Diaz-Twine]. He would have also been the oldest winner. Romeo, I believe, would have been the first LGBTQ male winner since season 15.

"So whoever won in our final Tribal would have been the first for something that would have been representing someone, and that's so powerful. Of course, for Black players, that's such a powerful thing. But having representation in age and diversity and socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation, that's such a powerful thing. Because anyone in future seasons can have more firsts."

Maryanne is also the second Canadian to win the show after Erika Casupanan from Survivor 41.

What Does The Survivor Champion Win?

The winner of Survivor gets to take home a $1 million cheque.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly after the Survivor finale aired, Maryanne shared that the past 11 months have been "surreal."

She said: "The thing that I'm really actually thankful for is because I had to sit on it for 11 months. I really had time to go and reflect. Like, when I came back from Survivor, I was an emotional wreck crying every day, just sleeping on the floor, just a mess having that time to reintegrate into regular life, and then also to see what's next? Like, I finished this dream. This dream's now done. "

She continued: "What do I figure out in my life? And figuring out that there's more in life than just Survivor was very helpful. And I'm so happy that I had that 11 months to think about it because I don't think I'd be in the same mental state that I am now if I had to only like five months from being crowned to actually people knowing that I'm crowned."
