A woman refusing to let her son share the same bedroom as his stepsibling has been backed online.
The Reddit user, a 36-year-old mom of a 10-year-old son, wrote that her partner Dan wants her son Ethan to share a room with his 11-year-old daughter Lila so he can convert one of the children's rooms into a home office.
Ethan and Lila, both from previous relationships of the woman and man respectively, currently each have their own rooms, which the original poster feels is essential for their comfort and privacy. While Ethan lives at home, Lila stays there with the couple every other week.

Despite the children getting along well, she firmly believes they are at an age where personal space and boundaries are crucial.
However, Dan—who has been working from the kitchen table—disagreed. He argued that it's common for siblings and stepsiblings to share rooms and that the children would adjust.
The woman stood her ground, suggesting alternatives such as creating a small workspace in their bedroom or rearranging the living room to accommodate a desk. Dan dismissed these ideas as "impractical", insisting that the kids would be fine sharing a room as Lila is only there part-time.
"Now Dan is accusing me of being unreasonable and unwilling to make sacrifices for our relationship. I feel guilty because I want our family dynamic to work, but I also want to protect my son's comfort and wellbeing," the woman wrote.
Newsweek spoke to Charlotte Bailey, a psychotherapist specializing in boundary setting, who said that personal space is critical for children and having their own rooms helps foster emotional security and wellbeing.
"Asking Ethan and Lila to share a bedroom could risk creating feelings of resentment or displacement, particularly in a blended family where they're already navigating complex dynamics and significant changes," Bailey said.
The woman's post went viral on Reddit, clocking up 8,500 upvotes and over 3,500 comments, with many rallying behind the mother's decision.
"Kids need their own space, period. He can set up his office somewhere else. It's not about not compromising—it's about what's fair for the kids," one user wrote. "If they're toddlers it's not a big deal. But in this case it's a very big deal," commented another.
Bailey also said that by dismissing Ethan's needs, it could impact his sense of stability and trust.
"Sharing a room at this stage will likely feel even more uncomfortable for both children. Having their own space becomes especially important during this time, as it allows them to navigate these developmental changes in a way that feels safe and respectful of their needs," she said.
The woman was declared not the a****** by the Reddit community.
