'Last Chance U': Will There Be a Season 6 of Laney College Netflix Show?

The fifth season of Last Chance U premiered on Netflix on Tuesday but fans shouldn't expect a sixth instalment of the popular series—not in the current format, anyway.

Since launching in 2016, the behind-the-scenes series focusing on community colleges and their football programs has developed a loyal following for its no-holds-barred approach and for featuring head coaches for whom shooting from the hip was second nature.

The latest season, set at Laney College in Oakland, California, aired earlier this week when Netflix released each of the eight episodes making up the latest instalment.

The fifth chapter of Last Chance U will also be the last, as far as college football is concerned. Netflix, however, has given the green light to a spinoff series focusing on basketball at junior colleges, titled Last Chance U: Basketball.

The first season will chronicle the 2019-20 season at East Los Angeles College, but the new show won't hit the screens until next year at the earliest.

"With this series, we always wanted to give viewers a raw behind-the-scenes look at junior college athletics and we're excited to expand the LCU legacy onto the court with junior college basketball," Last Chance U director Greg Whiteley explained.

Over the first four seasons, the show delved into the realities of community colleges and their football programs. The first two seasons were based at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC), before the series moved to Independence Community College (ICC) in Kansas for the following two seasons.

Football programs in community colleges are a world away from the glitz and glamour that surrounds several FBS schools—the top tier of college football—and the show regularly focused on players who have struggled from an academic standpoint or experienced far more serious troubles in their lives.

Some of the players at EMCC and ICC were highly-thought of prospects who had wasted their chances at a FBS program and were looking for a second chance to establish themselves in the top tier of college football, but the fifth season of Last Chance U features just one player—defensive back Rejzohn Wright—who can consider himself Division I material.

As has been the case throughout the first four seasons of the Emmy-nominated series, there's no sugarcoating the players' circumstances.

"We're the messengers. We do our best to show these players' lives as authentically as possible," Whiteley told USA Today earlier this month.

"As we've done that, these themes have naturally emerged. We've been hearing and documenting these stories for the last five years.... It's our job to make difficult stories more accessible, which sometimes means we're embedding them in a show that is also entertaining."

Led by Hall of Fame coach John Beam, Laney was the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association Football champion after going 11-2 in the season.

At the time of filming, Beam had just been voted CCCAA Football Coach of the Year and entered his 40th season as a coach.
