The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade must go on despite the rain that is expected on Thursday. The National Weather Service predicts a 70% probability of rain showers in New York City on Thanksgiving, beginning in the early morning and continuing into the evening. The agency predicts an 80% likelihood of rain showers in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving, beginning in the early morning and continuing most of the day. Both cities' morning temperatures will be in the low to mid-40s, so marchers and spectators will face a chilly rain. The midday high on Thanksgiving Day will barely be around 50 degrees. Meanwhile, more winter storm warnings and advisories are in effect in 14 states, with up to 7 feet of snow expected to strike certain mountain areas, causing travel mayhem just before Thanksgiving. The warning encompasses sections of Colorado, Idaho, Alaska, California, Oregon, and Nevada, while the advisories cover Michigan, Maine, Wyoming, New York, Wisconsin, Vermont, New Mexico, and Minnesota. Many will remain in place until Wednesday, during a week when millions of Americans intend to travel to spend Thanksgiving with their relatives. In the west, moderate rain and mountain snow are expected to persist, while a new storm forms over the Great Lakes. This storm appears to be quite light, but it could possibly deliver rain and wet snow to parts of Michigan and Wisconsin. Meanwhile, between Tuesday and next Monday, 80 million people are expected to travel more than 50 miles from their homes by roads, railroads, planes, and even cruise ships.

Travel forecast for Tuesday
In the Northeastern U.S., poor travel conditions will occur in northwestern Maine, northern New Hampshire, northern Vermont, and northwestern New York. National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists had a winter weather advisory in place for those states on Monday afternoon.
Precipitation will fall as sleet, snow, or rain, depending on the location.
"Although ice amounts will be light, the freezing rain is expected to fall on cold bare pavement. This will lead to the potential for glaze ice formation on untreated roads, leading to extremely dangerous travel conditions," the NWS office in Gray, Maine, said in the winter weather advisory, which will go into effect early Tuesday morning.
"Even light snowfall amounts can accumulate on roads and cause dangerous driving conditions due to snow-covered roads. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute," the office said.
In the Central U.S., poor travel conditions will be in effect in western Colorado, far southern and southeastern Wyoming, far northern New Mexico, central Utah, northern Nevada, far southern Oregon, and the northern and eastern areas of California.
An atmospheric river will bring high-elevation snow and widespread rain across California early this week, NWS Weather Prediction Center meteorologist Allison Santorelli told Newsweek. That moisture will track farther east by Wednesday.

Potential of lake-effect snow
A hazardous weather outlook is in place across much of New York, warning of potential lake-effect snow that could occur later this week.
Lake effect snow can produce 3 inches or more of snow per hour, the NWS said.
"There is definitely a signal for a decent lake effect snow event, but it likely won't start until Wednesday into Thursday and into next weekend," Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist at the NWS Weather Prediction Center, told Newsweek.
Travel impacts from the snow event are expected downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario this weekend when many people are returning after the Thanksgiving holiday.
"One other thing to note is we do have a cold front that should be pushing into the Eastern U.S. on Thursday, and it is likely to bring rain and possibly some wind impacts to portions of the East Coast," Santorelli said. "That may impact the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City."
The NWS hazardous weather outlook issued by the Albany office anticipates that the lake effect snow will begin earlier in the week.
"Lake effect snow is expected to develop across the western Adirondacks Tuesday night and Wednesday, with light to moderate snow accumulations possible," the outlook said. "If confidence increases in moderate snow accumulations, a Winter Weather Advisory would be issued later in time."

Families given stark warning before hitting the roads for Thanksgiving
U.S. drivers have been advised to be extra cautious when traveling during the upcoming holiday, as road deaths typically increase around Thanksgiving.
With families traveling great distances to be with each other on the holiday, Thanksgiving is a busy time of the year—for both road and air travel across the U.S.—and experts are predicting record-high traffic.
The National Safety Council has issued a fresh warning for those traveling by car for Thanksgiving in 2024, forecasting 502 fatalities in the country this year.
NSC data showed that in 2021, there were 521 vehicle fatalities in the U.S. during the Thanksgiving period, the highest number since 2007, when 542 people died. "Holidays are also often cause for celebrations involving alcohol consumption, a major contributing factor to motor-vehicle crashes," the organization said in its warning.
In addition to road deaths, the NSC forecast 57,200 medically consulted injuries, which it described as injuries "serious enough that a medical professional was consulted."

Best time to travel for Thanksgiving as experts predict record-high traffic

...
The roads are expected to be jammed with a record number of 71.7 million people traveling by car over Thanksgiving.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts that road travelers will surpass pre-pandemic numbers in 2019. There will be an additional 1.3 million travelers on the road compared with last year. Gas prices are also lower this Thanksgiving season compared with 2023.
"Thanksgiving is the busiest holiday for travel, and this year we're expecting to set new records across the board, from driving to flying and cruising," said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel.
"Americans reconnect with family and friends over Thanksgiving, and travel is a big part of that. AAA continues to see travel demand soar post-pandemic with our members looking for new adventures and memorable vacations."

What to expect on Wednesday
On Wednesday, one of the busiest travel days of the year, snow is forecast to accumulate over the Rocky Mountains from Colorado to New Mexico. Denver may awaken to several inches of snow, The Washington Post reports.
Light to moderate rain is anticipated to fall across Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas, northern Mississippi, and western Tennessee. Light, wet snow might form on the northern edge of this rain shield, perhaps falling across northern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and southern Michigan.
That night, the storm system is predicted to develop when an Arctic air mass to the north interacts with a surge of warmer, moister air from the Gulf of Mexico.
This will likely provide unsettled weather on Wednesday night, with thunderstorms probable in the Southeast and rain moving across the Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Rain to take east of U.S.
A low-pressure system will bring rain and storms to the Eastern United States this week.
In weather, a low-pressure system is an area where the air pressure is lower than the surrounding areas, causing air to rise and frequently leading to cloudy skies, wind, and precipitation; essentially, it's a "low" on a weather map, with air moving towards the center of the low-pressure area where the pressure is lowest.

Heavy rain expected in the Northeast – where rain is needed

...
Heavy rain is expected in sections of the Midwest and East Coast, with snowfall possible in the Northeast ahead of Thanksgiving.
Last week's storm sent rain to New York and New Jersey, where flames have been raging for weeks, as well as heavy snow to northeastern Pennsylvania. The rains were expected to alleviate drought conditions following a particularly dry fall.
"It's not going to be a drought buster, but it's definitely going to help," said Bryan Greenblatt, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Binghamton, New York.

More severe weather after bomb cyclone killed two last week
Two people were killed in the Pacific Northwest as a quickly escalating "bomb cyclone" slammed the West Coast last Tuesday, bringing powerful winds that fell trees and power lines while damaging houses and automobiles. Hundreds of thousands of people lost power in Washington state before severe winds and record rainfall hit Northern California. Fewer than 25,000 people in the Seattle region were without power Sunday evening. Two bodies were discovered Saturday in Sonoma County wine region, north of San Francisco, police said. According to the sheriff's department, someone strolling along a trail near Santa Rosa discovered a man's corpse in a flooded creek.
Deputy Rob Dillion said that hours later, rescue personnel found a victim inside a car bobbing in floods in neighboring Guerneville. Investigators are looking into whether the fatalities were caused by the storm.
The National Weather Service in the San Francisco Bay Area stated that Santa Rosa had its wettest three-day period on record, with around 12.5 inches (32 cm) of rain by Friday evening. Vineyards in neighboring Windsor were inundated.
Forecasters warned the potential of floods and mudslides continued as the region received additional rain beginning Sunday. However, the latest storm will not be as powerful as last week's atmospheric river, which is a lengthy plume of moisture that originates over the ocean and runs across land.
As the rain travels east during the week, higher altitudes in the Sierra Nevada, as well as parts of Utah and Colorado, may see substantial snowfall.

Storm system may cause travel challenges on Tuesday
A storm system will begin to affect the western U.S. on Monday and into Tuesday, WKBN reports. This may cause some travel complications for anyone departing or arriving at Denver and San Francisco's major airports. The precipitation will remain as rain in San Francisco, but severe rain/snow in nearby mountain areas may make traveling to the airport difficult.
Further east, the mountains of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming will be hit by a heavy blizzard on Tuesday. When the storm passes, numerous mountain places will record the snowfall in feet. Denver will most certainly receive some snow from this storm system, but accumulations will be low while the heaviest precipitation remains restricted to mountainous areas.

What are the different snow storm types?
Chief Meteorologist Mark Mancuso at WTAJ reveals the three main storm types that produce snowfall - and which one can result in more than six inches of snow.
- Miller A-type - develops in the southeast U.S. and typically travels along the coast or offshore. They almost guarantee snow if they hit the shore.
- Miller B-type - form in the Midwest with two storm centers making it hard to predict. But they can be responsible for some very heavy downfalls.
- Alberta Clipper - common storm type that forms in Canada's Alberta province and moves south towards the Midwest. They are known for their strong winds and depositing narrow bands of heavy snow - which can be six inches or more. They are typically stopped by the Appalachian Mountains.

80 million Americans expected to travel this week, TSA predicts
The American Automobile Association (AAA) forecasts that over 80 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday and next Monday. The majority of them will travel by vehicle.
The Transportation Security Administration anticipates screening 18.3 million travelers at U.S. airports during the same seven-day period. That would be 6% more than the same days last year, but it would be consistent with a pattern established until 2024.
The TSA expects that 3 million passengers will travel through airport security checkpoints on Sunday, with more than that potentially breaking the record of 3.01 million established on the Sunday following the July Fourth holiday. Tuesday and Wednesday are predicted to be the next busiest air travel days during Thanksgiving week.

Thanksgiving winter storm map shows states forecast to get heavy snow
The National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted an increased risk for cold and unsettled weather, including heavy snow for 11 states, for the post-Thanksgiving travel period, as shown by the map below.
Heavy snow, part of a winter storm, could blanket much of the northern and northeastern United States just as many Americans hit the roads and skies following Thanksgiving.
Forecasters warn that Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine are at risk of significant snowfall.
"Unsettled wintry weather is possible with this system, and a slight risk (20 to 40 percent chance) of heavy snow is indicated across parts of the Great Lakes and interior Northeast the day after Thanksgiving into the holiday weekend," said the NWS Climate Prediction Center in an update on Sunday, forecasting from November 29 through to December 5.
"There is an additional risk of high winds and much below normal temperatures across much of the East during the post-Thanksgiving travel period, which could contribute to lower wind chill values," NWS said.
Newsweek contacted the NWS via email last week for comment.

More about the Charlotte Douglas International Airport strike
The strike highlights growing frustration among airport workers who say their wages cannot keep up with the cost of living.
Many workers earn between $12.50 and $19 an hour—well below what the MIT Living Wage Calculator considers sufficient for a single person with no children in Charlotte, North Carolina.
"We're on strike today because this is our last resort. We can't keep living like this," ABM cabin cleaner Priscilla Hoyle said in a statement. "We're taking action because our families can't survive."
Charlotte Douglas International Airport expects to process more than one million passengers between last Thursday and the Monday after Thanksgiving, making this holiday travel season the busiest on record.
Demonstrations include an 11 a.m. rally and a 1 p.m. "Strikesgiving" lunch "in place of the Thanksgiving meal that many of the workers won't be able to afford later this week," union officials confirmed.

Southeast to see low pressure system before heading to Northeast
A low-pressure system is expected to deliver rain to the Southeast early Thursday before traveling northeast. Rain and windy weather are expected from Boston to New York, with snowfall likely in northern New Hampshire, Maine, and the Adirondacks. If the system moves further inland, forecasts predict less snow and more rain in the Alps.
"The system doesn't look like a powerhouse right now," a meteorologist with the weather service in Massachusetts, Hayden Frank, said. "Basically, this is going to bring rain to the I-95 corridor so travelers should prepare for wet weather. Unless the system trends a lot colder, it looks like rain."
