Today's 'Wordle' Word of the Day: #227 Answer and Hints for February 1

Wordle #227 is now ready for players to guess, and Newsweek has some useful pointers to get you started.

The daily brainteaser took the internet by storm when it launched late last year. According to its own developer, Josh Wardle, the main appeal of the puzzle game is that it does not try to get you addicted with long play sessions or incentivise you to spend any money.

Yet Wordle has recently been acquired by The New York Times Company for an undisclosed sum in "the seven-figures" range. Nothing is changing for the time being, but it is worth noting that the publisher has claimed that the game will "initially" remain free to current and existing users. The portentous use of the word "initially" here has caused a bit of a stir on social media, as many are starting to wonder how long it will be before The New York Times Company implements a paywall.

For now, though, you can still head over to the dedicated Wordle website and complete its daily conundrums without having to log into any accounts or spend money.

If you are struggling with Wordle #227 (on February 1), Newsweek has prepared a quick guide to help you out.

Wordle #227 Hints for February 1

We will provide the correct answer to Wordle #227 at the very end of this piece.

For those who don't want the whole thing spoiled, and just need a little push in the right direction, here are some general tips. The clues get progressively easier with each successive clue, so you can decide exactly how much guidance you want.

  • Hint #1: Today's Wordle puzzle contains two vowels, so you will need to go through "A', "E", "I", "O" and "U". We therefore recommend using "adieu" as a good starter word, as you can eliminate a lot of possibilities that way.
  • Hint #2: Wordle #227 also contains what is known as a consonant digraph. This is where two consonant letters combine to form one single phoneme (or sound). Examples of this include 'Th", "SH" and "CH".
  • Hint #3: A selection of words that rhyme with Wordle #227 includes "Chose", "Froze' and "Hose".
  • Hint #4: It is also an anagram of the word "Ethos".
  • Hint #5: Miriam-Webster defines Wordle #227 as the "plural of THAT".

In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, Josh Wardle has also offered his own advice on how to crack any Wordle puzzle.
