What We Know About the 'Yellowstone' Spin-Offs

Yellowstone is currently one of the most-watched cable shows ever, with the Kevin Costner neo-western also the most downloaded show of last year on Amazon, iTunes and Fandango. It is no surprise, then, that the show is getting a set of spin-offs that will expand its world.

When ViacomCBS announced the dozens of shows that will be joining CBS All Access when it rebrands to Paramount+ in March, there were two Yellowstone spin-offs on that list—a prequel, as well as a spin-off based on the continuing adventures of two characters from the show, all of which is streaming now on Peacock.

The modern day series has the working title of 6666, and will see Jefferson White and Ryan Bingham returning as ranch hands Jimmy Hurdstrom and Walker.

The official synopsis for this series reads: "Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing.

"The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world class cowboys are born and made."

This series joins another Yellowstone spin-off, details of which started to emerge earlier this year. While Yellowstone may be a neo-western, Y: 1883 is a full-blown western, taking the action back to the 19th century to tell the story of how the Dutton family forged its empire in the Wild West. The first promo for this show was released during the Super Bowl.

In a video promoting his run of new shows for Paramount+, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, Oscar-nominated for his script for Hell or High Water, gave a glimpse of this new prequel. He said, "this new show explores different eras of this 130-year legacy. What an opportunity to witness the first Duttons to come to Montana, and we see them when they were homesteading."

The synopsis for the show, meanwhile, reads: "Y: 1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America's promised land—Montana."

So far, however, no casting for the show has been revealed, though the above video does suggest that filming has started around the same locations where Yellowstone Season 4 is filming now .

Per Hollywood Reporter, these two shows being on Paramount+ means that the original show is "likely" to move from Peacock to this new streamer too.

Neither Y: 1883 or 6666 have a release date yet, though IMDB has the former listed for a 2021 release date. Paramount+, meanwhile, launches on March 4.
