Philip was born on the island of Corfu on June 10, 1921, to HRH Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

When his uncle, King Constantine I of Greece, was forced to abdicate the following year, the family fled to Paris, with the infant Philip carried aboard a Royal Naval ship inside a box of oranges.

He later moved to Kensington Palace, living with his grandmother, Princess Victoria, and attended Cheam School and then Gordonstoun, in Scotland.

By 1939 he enrolled in the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth, the start of his glittering naval career.

Philip joined the Royal Navy, serving on the HMS Ramillies as a midshipman as the U.K. entered World War II.

By 1942, aged just 21, Philip was promoted to First Lieutenant, second in command of the battleship HMS Wallace.

After the war, Philip and the then-Princess Elizabeth became engaged, with the Duke renouncing his Greek and Danish royal titles.

Between 1948 and 1964 the royal couple welcomed four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

At the time of his death, Philip and Elizabeth had eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, which will be 11 after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcome their second child, a girl, this summer.

Announcing his death on Thursday, Buckingham palace tweeted: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
