Americans Back Liz Cheney's Admonishment of Donald Trump After Capitol Violence: Poll

While Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has received a backlash from some Republican colleagues over her vote to impeach President Donald Trump, polling shows Americans mostly agree with her admonishment of the commander-in-chief.

The House GOP Conference Chair was the most senior Republican of the 10 who voted that way, following the violence at the Capitol on January 6.

Cheney has faced calls to resign from that position, though other lawmakers have defended her—prompting a fresh split in the Republican caucus.

A quote from Cheney on the president's response to the riot was put to 6,304 U.S. adults by YouGov on January 14.

"There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution," Cheney said, and respondents were asked to say whether they agreed or disagree with that statement.

The majority supported it, with 63 percent agreeing—52 percent strongly and 11 percent somewhat.

The quote from Cheney came from her January 12 statement detailing she would vote to impeach Trump.

In this, she said: "Much more will become clear in coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.

"Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution."

President Trump continues to face a backlash over his actions surrounding the events of January 6, though he has since condemned the violence and voiced his opposition to any such further actions.

On Wednesday, he became the first president to ever be impeached twice as Democrats.

"I unequivocally condemn the violence that we saw last week. Violence and vandalism have absolutely no place in our country, and no place in our movement," Trump said in a video statement following his second impeachment.

"Making America great again has always been about defending the rule of law, supporting the men and women of law enforcement and upholding our nation's most sacred traditions and values. Mob violence goes against everything I believe in, and everything, our movement stands for."
