'The Batman' Director Confirms 'Insane' Hidden Easter Egg Spotted by Fan

Director Matt Reeves has weighed in to a debate about a previously unnoticed detail from his hit superhero movie The Batman.

Robert Pattinson's first outing as the Caped Crusader drew a mixed response from the critics but nevertheless proved a resounding hit with fans with The Batman going on to enjoy the largest opening weekend for any film in the U.S. in 2022.

In the wake of the film's release, much of the online discussion has centered on the surprise appearance of one of Batman's most iconic arch enemies as well as what could lie in store for Colin Farrell's The Penguin, with a spin-off television series in the works.

However, with the film now available to watch at home on HBO Max, fans in the U.S. have been poring over the finer details of Reeves' movie to try and spot any Easter Eggs or other fascinating details that may have previously been missed when watching it at the multiplex.

An Easter Egg refers to an unexpected or unnoticed feature that has been included as a bonus for those re-watching the film. One such detail was shared to Twitter by Ryan Unicomb, who attributed the "insane catch" to his friend, Australia-based streamer AJ Rascals.

As movie Easter Eggs go, it's a pretty impressive one too. According to Unicomb's tweet "at exactly 31:55 into The Batman you can actually see Paul Dano's Riddler in the window opposite the Iceberg Lounge."

Unicomb included a screenshot from the film for further confirmation and tagged Reeves in the post, requesting confirmation of the discovery.

The discovery is significant because—SPOILER ALERT—it is from that very apartment that the Riddler later shoots and kills John Turturro's crime lord Carmine Falcone and where he also orchestrates his reign of terror on Gotham.

Adding another layer to the complex tapestry of the film's Se7en-inspired murder mystery plot, Reeves later took to Twitter to confirm the easily missed detail was deliberately included in the film.

Writing directly to Unicomb in a post which has been retweeted over 4,700 times and liked a further 54,000 times, the filmmaker said he could "confirm 100 percent" that Dano's character featured as part the blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance.

Reeves would not be the first Batman director to include an Easter Egg in his film.

On Reddit, one fan recently uncovered a clever moment of foreshadowing from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, which appeared to hint at the grim fate awaiting Aaron Eckhart's character Harvey Dent.
