C-SPAN Caller Shouts Racial Slur, Wishes Death on Obama

A caller to C-SPAN's Washington Journal television program on Sunday reportedly shouted "death to the ni**er Obama," although the audio was not aired.

Posting on Twitter, Washington Post columnist Paul Waldman, who appeared on the show Sunday morning, revealed the disturbing incident.

"The most exciting part of my appearance on C-SPAN this morning was definitely when a caller shouted 'Death to the ni**er Obama!'" the columnist said in his tweet.

According to Raw Story, it appears that C-SPAN used its seven-second delay to block the offensive comment from airing.

"Barack Obama is an illegal alien!" the man named Christopher, who called into the show's Republican line, first said.

In response, the C-SPAN host asked: "How do you know this?"

Following that exchange, audio for the program cut for two seconds, a video of the program showed. However, as the audio cuts, those appearing on screen appear visibly uncomfortable with the comments.

"Let's try to get somebody who has something constructive to add to the conversation," the host could be heard saying after the audio cut. He then takes another caller, apparently hanging up on Christopher.

Prior to the offensive rant, Waldman was discussing businessmen such as Trump who enter politics. He said that those from the business sector often believe "politics isn't hard, government isn't hard," but argued that this is a misconception.

"Politics is intricately complicated," he said. "With Trump however, it's even worse," he added, calling into question the president's criteria for hiring staff. He pointed to Trump's recent comments regarding disgruntled former White House employee, and Apprentice star, Omarosa Manigault Newman. Trump has said that he hired her because she lavished praise on him.

It's unclear whether or not Christopher initially called in with a point relevant to the discussion. However, the racist insult against Trump's predecessor came the same day as Manigault Newman directly accused the president of being a racist.

Asked by Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC's Politics Nation Sunday whether Trump is a racist, Manigault Newman quickly replied : "Yes, Donald Trump is."

Continuing her criticism of the president's racial policies, the former Trump loyalist said: "We have a lot to lose right now."

"I believe [Trump] wants to start a race war in this country," she said.

Manigault Newman also pointed to the infamous "birther" movement to justify her claims. Trump constantly pushed for Obama to release his birth certificate, giving credence to the false claim that the former president was not born in the U.S. C-SPAN caller Christopher appeared to be alluding to this conspiracy theory in his racist rant.

A survey released by YouGov at the end of last year revealed that 51 percent of Republicans still believe the widely debunked myth. The percentage was higher among Republicans who voted for Trump, with 57 percent saying it was "definitely true" or "probably true."
