'I Got You a Gift': Cat Surprises Owner With Live Mouse in Wild Video

A pet owner got the shock of her life while attempting to record a cute video of her cat after her feline friend decided to surprise her with a live mouse.

Cats may be the furry animal friends we turn to for comfort and companionship in our everyday lives, but behind it all, as a species, they have retained the same hunter/gatherer skills that helped their ancestors fend for themselves in the wild.

A 2013 study by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, which examined the predatory habits of cats, concluded that domestic cats are responsible for the deaths of as many as 20.7 billion smaller animals including mice every year.

Most cat owners will have encountered the remnants of some former rodent who made the mistake of crossing paths with their beloved kitty.

What's less common, however, is an encounter with a cat and a mouse that's very much alive. Yet that's exactly what happened to Jacey Brooke Templeton. When Jacey first hit the record button on the video that she has since shared to TikTok, it's clear she had something very sweet in mind.

The video is available here.

Having heard the noise of her cat approaching the cat-flap, Jacey had positioned herself just below the feline's entrance into the house, ready to capture her arrival.

As the on-screen caption explains, she was "just trying to make a cute video." What she got instead, was something akin to a horror movie.

Initially everything appeared to be going to plan. There was a noise, Jacey got into position and a pair of adorable paws could be seen popping through the cat flap. In a flash, however, things took a turn for the dark as the cat popped its head into the room to reveal it was holding a mouse.

Just when it seemed like things couldn't get any worse, the cat proceeded to drop the mouse on its owner's head. While that development was distressing enough, the entire situation was ramped up further when it quickly became apparent that the mouse was very much alive.

It became obvious from the moment the mouse bounced off Jacey's head before making a dash for freedom. Jacey handled it like any rational person would, of course, by laughing maniacally while jumping to her feet and asking in a terrified voice: "What the f***?!"

"My kitty taking care of me by bringing me dinner! Enjoy," Jacey wrote alongside the video, which has been viewed 25 million times on TikTok. Viewers on social media were quick to share in her horror at the situation.

Hannah Goodyear said she "would be traumatized" if that had happened to her. Lil Squirrel Man, meanwhile, said if anything Jacey's response was an "underreaction." Jade Charlton was in shock, noting that the cat "straight up threw it at you."

Rachelpnw couldn't believe the way the mouse "bounced" off her head, while Nadin Rizk claimed she would "never know peace again" if that happened to her. Lisanorthey agreed, writing: "I would have a heart attack."

Plenty of people saw the funny side, of course.

Kuroo16 imagined the cat telling her owner "I got you a gift" as she dropped the mouse on her head. Mariana Tavernor, meanwhile, envisioned the cat as a takeaway delivery driver telling his owner "your dashdoor order is ready" as they released the rodent.

Orangemetalcup tried to put a positive spin on it, describing the mouse as almost "like a reward." Daniela.nyc was less positive though, declaring that she would "need to move out immediately" if that happened to her.

Newsweek has contacted Jacey for comment.
