Conservatives Slam Rex Chapman for Comparing Clarence Thomas, Bill Clinton

Former professional basketball player Rex Chapman has gotten criticism from conservatives on Twitter after comparing Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to Bill Clinton.

In a Twitter thread blasting Thomas for attending a college graduation in 2018 with primarily white students, Chapman wrote, "The time Justice Clarence Thomas attended the graduation event of Christendom college students along with Late Justice Antonin Scalia's son. 2018. Not another person of color in the picture..."

He went on to write in multiple tweets, "I think the thing I think is most funny about this is that these white kids and their parents view this as their entry into black America. Clarence Thomas would last 20-30 seconds in an NBA locker room. Why have you never seen Clarence Thomas at an NBA game? As in — ever?"

"Bill Clinton used to come to our games in Landover with the Bullets. Clarence Thomas - never," Chapman tweeted.

The former basketball player turned social media influencer received backlash from some who claimed his tweet was racist. TV commentator Mark Hyman wrote, "This is what classic, liberal bigotry looks like. He's black so he must like basketball, football and boxing, right? Someone stop Rex before he starts spouting off about what foods black people eat. You know he's dying to say it."

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro mocked Chapman in a tweet, writing, "'I'm going to have to investigate whether Malcolm X was a big NBA attendee before deciding if he was actually black.' -- Rex Chapman, former CNN+ personality."

YouTuber and commentator David Hookstead also defended Thomas on Twitter, writing, "It is amazing how Rex Chapman casually tweets nonstop racist attacks on Clarence Thomas and the media just ignores it. More than anything, it must kill Chapman to know he has no lasting legacy, but Thomas' will be felt for 100s of years in America."

And user T.J. Moe even mentioned Chapman's previous criminal offenses, writing, "Rex Chapman thinks black people should be more like him, a white drug addict who blows all his money and gets arrested, than Clarence Thomas, a model citizen who resides on the Supreme Court. But hey, at least Rex has been to a NBA game. That proves his commitment to blackness."

Chapman was arrested in 2014 for shoplifting from an Apple Store in Scottsdale, Arizona, and has previously struggled with drug addiction after retiring from professional basketball in 2000.

Chapman has not shied away from raging against the Supreme Court Justice on his social media, commenting recently on the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that protected the right to abortion in the U.S. Justice Thomas recently wrote a concurring opinion that cases securing gay rights and the ability to purchase birth control could also be thrown out following Roe v. Wade, an opinion that also prompted a petition for his impeachment which has over 725,000 signatures as of publication time.

Chapman previously shared a video from 1991 in which Thomas states, "I believe the Constitution protects the right to privacy," before Chapman stated, "Clarence Thomas in 2022 abortion decision: The Constitution gives you no right to privacy."

Newsweek reached out to Justice Clarence Thomas for further comment.
