A Florida boater has said that he saved roughly $500 last month after a friend of his beat a Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy in a game of rock, paper, scissors.
The boater, Adam Freedman, told NBC 6 Thursday that he and his friends were cruising near Peanut Island on April 6 when they were pulled over by deputies, who said he owed roughly $500 in fines.
According to Fusco Law Group, a Jacksonville-based law practice, boaters can be stopped by law enforcement at anytime to ensure that their boat "complies with boating laws and regulations." Boating fines can be issued for a variety of reasons, "from inadequate safety equipment to boating under the influence."

In the event a boater is issued a citation that results in a fine, they have 30 days from the date of the citation to pay it. Freedman, however, avoided paying his fines altogether after a friend of his beat the cop in the childish game.

A video that purports to show the encounter was posted to TikTok last month by someone under the username thickbwoy, who wrote: "We got out of a [felony] with rock, paper, scissors." The post has amassed more than 20 million views and over 2.6 million likes.
In the video, a young woman plays rock, paper, scissors with a sheriff's deputy, and beats him in just under 10 seconds. Once her friends realize she's won, the entire boat cheers. After a few moments of celebration, some of the boaters shake hands with the sheriff's deputy, and the video ends.
Freedman alleged to NBC 6 that the game was the deputy's idea.
"He kinda looks at me and he's just like 'I'll do you a favor, if you beat me in a game of rock, paper, scissors, shoot I'll take off the tickets and I'll let you guys go,'" he said, adding that he was "astonished" the officer made the offer in the first place.
He also clarified that, despite what was stated in the TikTok, neither he nor his friends committed a felony.
In the aftermath of the video's virality, the officer is currently under investigation.
Newsweek reached out to the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office for more information, but it declined to provide specifics as the investigation is still ongoing.
As it turns out, the deputy from Freedman's story isn't the first Florida cop to make headlines recently. On Friday, a Florida police officer reportedly ran over a woman who was lying on the beach. Another cop in Florida made headlines Friday for allegedly shooting a man with mental health issues on his third day on the job. Meanwhile in September, a Florida sheriff told residents to "shoot and kill" a suspect should he enter their homes.
