Where To Use the 'Destiny 2' Strange Key — And How To Get Strange Coins

If you want to get the Forerunner exotic sidearm in the latest Destiny 2 update, you will need to jump through a few hoops. Specifically, you will need to earn a deposit of strange coins and track down an equally strange key.

Both of these are steps in the new "Magnum Opus" quest that was added to Destiny 2 as part of Bungie's 30th-anniversary update (which celebrates the founding of the development studio itself in 1991). If you can complete all the tasks associated with this mission, then you will be treated to an exotic firearm that might be familiar to fans of a certain other Bungie franchise.

Indeed, the Forerunner heavily resembles the iconic magnum weapon from Halo (although it is not explicitly referred to as such). Bungie are fully committed to Destiny nowadays and the latest entries in the Master Chief saga have all been handled by 343 Industries instead, so this is not technically an official crossover.

However, if you are a Halo fanatic then you will definitely want to pick up this exciting piece of loot. The below walkthrough should help accelerate this process, by showing you how to get strange coins and what to do with the strange key item.

If nothing else, embarking on this little adventure ought to get you pumped for the imminent release of the Halo Infinite campaign.

Before we go any further, it is worth breaking down precisely what the Magnum Opus quest entails, so that you understand what you are getting yourself into. The individual objectives are as follows:

  1. Accept the quest from Xur in his Treasure Horde base on Eternity (This is a new planet that can be found just below the moon on the destination map)
  2. Collect seven strange coins
  3. Complete a number of Starhorse bounties. These can be purchased from the celestial equine itself in Xur's Treasure Horde (strange coins are the currency)
  4. Take the strange key from Xur
  5. Use the strange key in the snow swept valley area
  6. Descend the cave and retrieve an anomalous object
  7. Deliver the anomalous object to Banshee-44 in the Tower LZ and claim the Forerunner magnum.

There is quite a lot to unpack with this lengthy questline but, for this guide, we are just going to focus on the strange coins and the strange key.

Once you have managed to locate the ever-transient Xur at his new haunt on Eternity, you can speak with him to get the Magnum Opus quest. Your first objective here will be to collect seven strange coins, which you can then use to purchase bounties from the nearby Starhorse (which is basically a living astrological constellation).

In terms of getting those coins in the first place, they're not hidden collectables that you have to find around the game world. Instead, they are simply handed out as rewards for completing any of the following activities:

  • Bounties
  • Crucible matches
  • Dares of Eternity runs (they are in the chests at end of this gauntlet)
  • Gambit matches
  • Heroic Public Events
  • Vanguard Strikes

How To Get the Strange Key and Where To Use It

Xur himself is holding onto the strange key item that you need, but he won't give it to you until you have reached a certain reputation level with him (also known as your Strange Favor ranking).

To get on Xur's good side, you will need to complete bounties that are offered by the aforementioned Starhorse quest giver. This NPC can be found at the Xur's Treasure Horde LZ, just behind the merchant himself.

When you interact with the Starhorse, you will be able to purchase bounties from it using the strange coins that you have already collected. It will offer both daily and weekly quests that are of varying levels of difficulty, so you should be able to find something that works for you.

The more of these bounties you complete, the higher your Stranger Favor rank will be. Once you get to level four, head over to Xur and pick up the strange key, free of charge.

Now that you are in possession of the key, you might be wondering what you actually need to do with it. Luckily, you don't have to venture too far, as the mechanism it unlocks is also in the Xur's Treasure Horde LZ.

If you are facing Xur, do a 180-degree turn and head towards the glowing purple light at the back of the room. Stand in this for long enough and you will be teleported to an exterior snowy area.

Upon arrival, you will need to head over to a cluster of rocks that are at your 2 o'clock. When you get near enough to these, a marker will appear on screen showing you the exact spot that you need stand. Once you are position, a prompt should appear instructing you to finally use the strange key and progress to the end of the quest.

Destiny 2 is available now. It is free to download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X and PC.
