He's brought us wrestlers and ballet dancers, and now he might bring us a massive rabid dog. According to new reports, Oscar-nominated Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to direct Netflix's upcoming remake of the 1983 horror film "Cujo," based on the novel by Stephen King. The new adaptation was just announced last week so things are clearly moving fast for the film.

Other than Aronofsky, the only other creative attached to the film is producer Roy Lee. Lee's long list of credits includes "It," "It: Chapter Two," Max's "Salem's Lot" series, and the upcoming "The Long Walk." So he's clearly no stranger to Stephen King's work.

Cujo

...

In "Cujo," the titular dog is a friendly beast until he's bitten on the nose by a rabid bat. The dog kills a neighbor and its owner before it traps Dee Wallace and her son Tad in a malfunctioning Ford Pinto. Dee must contend not only with the 200-pound dog, but with the heatstroke that is slowly killing her and her son.

Lewis Teague directed 1983's "Cujo" and he apparently had an affinity for KIng's work, because his next project was "Cat's Eye" - an anthology of King stories. He was also known for "The Jewel of the Nile," the 1985 sequel to the comedy adventure "Romancing the Stone."

This year is a busy one for Stephen King adaptations. "The Monkey," released last month, tells the story of twin brothers whose lives are driven nuts by a cursed toy monkey. Still to come is "The Life of Chuck," bowing on June 6. Based on the Stephen King novella, it tells the story of the eponymous Charles, played by Tom Hiddleston. Five months later, on November 7, fans will be able to see Edgar Wright's adaptation of "The Running Man," a version reportedly much more faithful to the source material than the 1987 action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Nor is it just the big screen where we can find new King adaptations this year. The Prequel series "It: Welcome to Derry" is scheduled to release on HBO this year and "The Institute" is likewise set to stream on MGM+.

"Cujo" would mark Darren Aronofsky's first Stephen King adaptation, but he's no stranger to horror. Both 2017's "Mother!" and 2010's "Black Swan" are full of enough psychological horror to rate as nightmare fuel.
