Fan Notices Incredible Easter Egg in Movie 'Erin Brockovich': 'Erinception'

Movie buffs have noticed an incredible detail in the hit film Erin Brockovich, based on the story of a mother's crusade for justice with the same name.

Julia Roberts starred as single mom Brockovich in the film, released in 2000, which tells the true story of the polluted water supply in Hinkley.

Set in the early 90s in the California town, mom-of-three Brockovich starts work as a legal assistant and she notices that many of the town's residents are sick.

The plot follows Brockovich's quest for justice against utility company PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric.)

During the 1950s and 60s, groundwater was contaminated with Chromium 6 from their natural gas pumping station.

The film ends with PG&E being ordered to pay $333 million in 1996, which at the time was the largest sum ever paid out in a direct-action lawsuit.

Roberts won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Brockovich, with her incredible memory, revealing wardrobe and potty mouth all an accurate representation.

In a CNBC article from 2008, Brockovich was quoted as saying: "Yes, I did dress that way. I was actually taken back by the response of many people regarding my wardrobe. Yes, I had a potty mouth in the movie and I still do."

But as well as having a movie made about her life, and sharing her name with the title, Brockovich herself stars in the film.

A fan shared an incredible detail to Reddit, under the username Llism, saying: "In Erin Brockovich (2000), Erin, played by Julia Roberts, is ordering food at a restaurant.

"She's being waited on by Julia, played by Erin Brockovich."

They shared a snap showing a beaming waitress taking a food order, who is Brockovich herself.

The post was uploaded to the site's Movie Details forum on Monday, where it's already been upvoted more than 15,000 times, and can be seen here.

Fellow fans commented on the cameo, with Willeth saying: "I never noticed that, that's great!"

Secretcharacter said: ""Did you know that in Erin Brockovich, Erin, played by Julia Roberts, was waited on by a waitress named Julia who was played by Erin Brokovich?" - Allen Tsai."

NameInCrimson commented: "They named Erin Brockovich's character Julia."

BlueBloodSW6 exclaimed: "Holy s***... an actual detail."

While Kazmeyers simply called it: "Erinception."

And Three-sense pointed out: "Julia Roberts' character plays Julia Roberts in Ocean's 12."

Minnick27 thought: "Cameos are common, but I think giving Erin a Julia name tag is interesting."

RobinJ1994 points out: "If I remember correctly as well, a guy sitting behind them is the real lawyer from the case too (Ed Masry)."

Dactyif also noted that, writing: "Ed Masry also makes an appearance in that scene as a cameo. Erin was his legal assistant."

As well as Brockovich's cameo, the Redditors are right in pointing out another Easter egg appears in the scene, with lawyer Ed Masry sitting behind Roberts in the diner scene.

Albert Finney plays Masry, who, in the film, first represents Brockovich in an unrelated case, before hiring her, as she goes on to gather evidence in the case against PG&E.

While some details were changed for the big screen, Masry was Brockovich's boss in real life, who helped build the landmark multi-plaintiff lawsuit.

About her cameo, Brockovich said in an ABC interview, referring to director Steven Soderbergh: "So Steven called me and asked me to do the cameo, I didn't want to be on camera. I'm not an actress, and he said you'll be glad you did it.

"Julia's playing Erin, but I'm Erin playing the waitress and my nametag was Julia. I'm like, you don't do this to a dyslexic, I mean you just don't do this. You see the scene, Ed Masry, real-life Ed Masry, is at the table behind us."
