Golden Retriever Lies Down in Muddy Bog in Hilarious Video Viewed 21M Times

A dog who appeared unable to resist the allure of lying in a muddy bog while out on a walk with the owner has gone viral on TikTok.

It's common knowledge that dogs love nothing more than going for a dip in a muddy puddle. What's less commonly known are the reasons for this behavior.

According to the dog walking experts over at Wag Walking, it can often be down to the fact the dog is "overheating." "On a hot and humid summer day, some cool wet mud can just hit the spot," the website said. "The moisture and cooler temperatures can help your dog cool off."

It can also be an instinctual aspect, rooted in the canine's basic "predatory" instincts. "Rolling around in mud or other substances can mask their scent, allowing them to sneak up on prey more efficiently," Wag Walking explained.

Alternatively, it may be linked to something a lot simpler: boredom. "A lot of this comes from boredom, they just simply don't have anything better to do," the site said. "Boredom strikes a canine just like it would a child."

In the case of Bilbo, the golden retriever who has found social media fame thanks to his mud-dipping antics, it may be a combination of all three.

What makes Bilbo's efforts especially impressive is the technique. While some dogs would opt to roll in the mud or charge through chaotically, there's something almost graceful about the way Bilbo stretches out over the bog below him.

It's clear this canine is savoring every moment of his mud bath, perhaps knowing that an extended stay in the doghouse awaits him when he returns home. Not that his owner is especially upset, filming his mucky antics in a video posted to his TikTok account Bilbothegolden, where it has already been watched 21.9 million times.

For many fellow dog lovers, it was an all too familiar scenario. "Oh my absolute god!" Nicky Hulme wrote. "My worst nightmare." Theonewiththeservicedog found the video very relatable. "This is my dog 100 percent," they wrote. "I swear she has a mud detector."

For others, it presented a classic dog conundrum. "Why is their first instinct to lay in it?" Tik Toker asked. "But they hate the bath?" Elsewhere, Yazlikes2draw claimed Bilbo was simply dressing up like a "chocolate labrador" while puppy_and_bunny warned: "I feel a bath coming."

More than anything though, people were drawn to the video by the golden retriever's adorable, outgoing behavior. "That looks like it was really fun," andreemeer77 wrote. "Nothing like getting all muddy and wet."

There's no shortage of adorable dog content online of course, whether it's this video of a canine "snoring like a cartoon character" or the time one owner set up a security camera in their kitchen to see what their puppy gets up to at night.
