Since Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United in the summer of 2009, a host of pretenders have tried, and failed, to live up to the Portuguese's star billing.

Some of them have been Ronaldo's compatriots, like Luis Nani who sparkled intermittently at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2015.

Others, such as the Netherlands forward Memphis Depay, sold to Lyon this month, have sunk almost without trace before moving on.

It seems every tricky winger who arrives at United now will be saddled with the same description, and 20-year-old Benfica starlet Goncalo Guedes is likely to be no different.

Capped twice by Portugal's senior side, Guedes is "ready for his farewell," according to Portuguese newspaper Record, with United and Paris Saint-Germain in prime position for his signature.

Explosive, fast, skilful and with an eye for goal, comparisons with a young Ronaldo may be more than simply cosmetic. There is irony, too, in that PSG might like Guedes to replace Angel di Maria, another sublimely talented winger who failed to play up to Ronaldo's shadow at United.

The pressure of running in Ronaldo's boots has ended many a United career before Guedes. United fans will be hoping the latest candidate has his predecessor's mental strength to stand up to the highest expectations.
