This Is Joe Biden's Schedule for His First Day As President

The Biden-Harris transition team has released Joe Biden's schedule for his first day as president of the United States. He will take the oath of office in Washington, D.C. at noon on Wednesday.

Biden, his wife Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff will start the day by attending a church service at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in D.C.

They will then head to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony. The oath of office will be administered to Biden by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Harris will then take the vice presidential oath.

Biden will deliver his inaugural address as the 46th president. According to the schedule, the new president and vice president are expected to review troops outside the Capitol at 1.40pm ET. This may give an indication of the length of Biden's speech.

There has been no suggestion of what Biden will say in the speech, but he is likely to make an appeal for unity.

Biden, Harris—who will be the nation's 49th vice president—the new first lady and second gentleman will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery at 2.25pm.

At 3.15pm, the first and second families will receive a presidential escort to the White House, travelling via 15th Street. Two hours later, Biden is scheduled to sign the first executive orders of his term.

Wednesday's executive orders and presidential actions are expected to reverse some of President Donald Trump's most controversial decisions, as well as trying to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

At 8.48pm, Biden, Harris and their spouses will attend the "Celebrating America" inaugural program and the vice president will deliver remarks. This primetime special will take the place of the traditional inaugural ball because of the coronavirus pandemic.

As such, some of the typical aspects of inauguration day will not take place, such as the president's first dance with the first lady. However, Tom Hanks is hosting the virtual celebration, which will feature performances by Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and others.

The president and the first lady will appear on the Blue Room Balcony overlooking the South Lawn of the White House at 9.55pm. This will conclude their public schedule for Biden's first day in office.

Biden's newly appointed press secretary, Jen Psaki, is also due to deliver a briefing to the media at 7pm.
