The John Mulaney Twitter Frenzy Explained

John Mulaney's name is trending online again and many social media users are wondering what it's got to do with Olivia Munn.

Mulaney has endured an eventful 2021 so far and the comedian has once again found himself at the center of a lot of online chat relating to his personal life.

Here's a summary of everything that's happened to Mulaney in the past year which led to him trending online over the weekend.

Drug rehabilitation and divorce

In December 2020, Mulaney appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and discussed why he'd taken a staff writer job on his friend's show, Late Night with Seth Meyers. He said he realized he was going "totally crazy" in lockdown and "really needed a job" because he liked having a boss and completing assignments.

Later that month it was reported that Mulaney had checked himself into a drug rehabilitation center. He stayed part of the program until moving himself to outpatient care in February, according to Page Six. Mulaney has been very open about his past drug use and addiction issues in his stand-up comedy specials.

In May, it was revealed that Mulaney and his wife Anna Marie Tendler were divorcing after almost seven years of marriage. At the time Tendler posted a statement describing how heartbroken she was with Mulaney's decision to end the marriage but wished him support and success as he continued his recovery.

Days after reports of the divorce started to emerge in May, rumors started to surface of Mulaney dating Olivia Munn, which started another Twitter storm.

Online speculation linking John Mulaney and Olivia Munn

Speculation surrounding the relationship between Mulaney and Munn began in June when photographs of them lunching together in Los Angeles were published by People. Mulaney officially filed for divorce from Tendler on July 23.

A few months down the line and the pair are trending again. This is partly because Mulaney is back out on the road performing stand-up, but also because of pictures of Munn which were posted by Page Six on September 3.

Mulaney has been the focus of a lot of attention online and many Twitter users have shared their opinions on his turbulent year. Some Twitter users voiced their concerns about the apparent obsessive fandom which Mulaney seems to generate.
