Louis van Gaal has been sacked as manager of Manchester United after two years at Old Trafford.

The United board has let the Dutchman go with one year left on his contract, according to the BBC.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager won the FA Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace but failed to steer the club to Champions League qualification.

Jose Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea in December 2015 and was Van Gaal's assistant at Barcelona, is set to become his old boss' successor.

Mourinho is believed to be meeting with United representatives on Tuesday to finalize details of a contract.
