Kathy Griffin Reveals She's Now Cancer-Free After Battling Lung Cancer

Kathy Griffin has announced that she is cancer-free, four months after revealing that she had been diagnosed with Stage I lung cancer.

The comedian, 61, shared the news of her diagnosis in August in an emotional post on her social media accounts, ahead of going into surgery to have part of her left lung removed.

Making an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, the former Suddenly Susan star drew cheers from the audience as she announced: "I'm cancer free!"

As she arrived on the ABC talk show, Griffin explained her higher-pitched voice, as she said: "I had surgery. You're not going to believe this... I've never smoked but I got lung cancer. In August, I had half of my left lung removed I'm not even kidding."

Adding that the use of an intubation tube had affected her vocal cord, she added: "So now I'm like Minnie Mouse meets Marilyn Monroe."

"It will heal, but I'm sort of enjoying [my voice]," Griffin went on. "I'm a good two octaves higher, I think... It's higher than Mariah Carey, I know that."

After titular host Jimmy Kimmel enquired if all of the cancer had been removed, Griffin responded: "Yes! So I'm cancer free... I don't know why, I had a tumor, right? And I've never smoked, and it was in there for 10 years.

"So get this—they took it out, and they found it on another scan. So I go in, and here's the thing: when you're a comic, it's horrible when the doctors want to do their material on you.

"So I go in, and he's describing how they take half your lung out, and he goes, 'It's kind of like a balloon. So we do it laparoscopically and we poke it.' And then he goes, 'And when we take it out, it kind of looks like a used condom.' And then he goes, 'You can use that!'"

Griffin received an outpouring of support from a number of celebrities—including Mia Farrow, Sarah Silverman and Ellen Barkin—when she announced her cancer diagnosis on social media back in August.

She wrote at the time: "I've got to tell you guys something. I have cancer. I'm about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed. Yes, I have lung cancer even though I've never smoked!

"The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung. Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing. I should be up and running around as usual in a month or less."

In apparent reference to the backlash she had faced for posing with the severed head of an effigy of then-President Donald Trump in 2017, she added: "It's been a helluva 4 years, trying to get back to work, making you guys laugh and entertaining you, but I'm gonna be just fine.

"Of course I am fully vaccinated for Covid. The consequences for being unvaccinated would have been even more serious. Please stay up to date on your medical check ups. It'll save your life."
