Good news for Manchester City fans: in Pep Guardiola, you have one of the world's very best managers signed, sealed and now unveiled.

Bad news: even Guardiola won't be able to lure Lionel Messi to Etihad Stadium.

"He is not a bad player, this guy, but I am sorry, Messi has to stay in Barcelona for the rest of his career," Guardiola said when asked by a City supporter at the club's academy whether he would be interested in the Barcelona forward.

City would have the money to buy Messi under its Abu Dhabi owners, but convincing the Argentine to give up his life and career in Spain is a far harder task than meeting his buyout clause.

Messi enjoyed the most fruitful period of his career under Guardiola in Catalunya between 2008 and 2012, winning 13 trophies during that time.

According to The Times, City has looked into the possibility of signing Messi under Guardiola's leadership. But if even the chance of working with Pep again cannot sway him, it appears the 29-year-old really will be a Barcelona player for life.
